It was an unforgettable camp experience for a group of girls who joined a five week travelling camp in South Africa. In addition to taking in some of the most beautiful sights in the world, the girls visited Shluchim and Chabad Houses along the way, and as counselors in Johannesburg’s Camp Gan Israel day camp gave of themselves to helps teach others.
The girls came together from New York, Minnesota, California, Florida, Amsterdam and Berlin to enjoy some of the most stunning sights and sounds nature has to offer, from taking in Lion’s Head, Cape Point, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Signal Hill, Kirstenbosch in Cape to Town, to seeing G-d’s Window, Mac Mac Falls, Pilgrims Rest in Mpumalanga.
Of course, no trip to Africa is complete without safaris, and the girls enjoyed plenty of animal interactions; watching the penguins at Boulder’s Beach, playing with the monkeys at the Monkey Sanctuary, petting the cubs at the Lion Park and a full day safari in the famed Kruger National Park where they saw 6 of “The Magnificent Seven.”
The camp also travelled to the South Coast in Kwazulu Natal, where they enjoyed surfing, snorkelling and other water sports. In Johannesburg the camp enjoyed trips to Soweto and Gold Reef City, as well biking and horse riding excursions.
“In between trips, we were inspired by the incredible dedication of the Shluchim and the farbrengens and stories they shared with us,” said head counselor, Mushky Wineberg, who led the camp along with Miriam Chazan and Chasi Levertov. “Even with all of the incredible experiences we enjoyed, those moments with the Shluchim made a profound impact on us all, and it is what the girls are still speaking about.”
The campers turned that inspiration to action during camp by serving as counselors in Camp Gan Israel, a day camp for the Johannesburg Jewish community which attracts children of all backgrounds and affiliations. “It felt great to give back to the community which had welcomed us so warmly,” said Shalhevet Teitelbaum.
The South Africa Travelling Camp is directed by Rabbi Pini and Rochie Pink.

You’re favourite aunt😉
It was amazing! It’s for 10th grader and goes over 5 weeks. During the first two weeks they did counseling in the Chabad Camp Johannesburg and the last three weeks they made exciting trips through South Africa. Our daughter enjoyed every moment from the beginning till the last day. It’s perfect for girls who like nature and hiking.
