The Israel Defense Forces search and rescue team that arrived in South Florida shortly after the Champlain Towers South collapsed last month was heading home Sunday after an emotional sendoff in Surfside.
The group flew out to the US and began working at the site three days after the building collapsed.
During a brief ceremony, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava thanked the battalion for their “unrelenting dedication” and presented them with an honorary “key to the county.”
In return, the Israeli team leader, Col. (res.) Golan Vach, presented Levine Cava and Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett with an Israeli flag signed by the unit’s members.
The team members were also cheered as they walked through the town, with the streets lined by local rescue teams and residents.
