In an effort to take Camp Gan Israel to the next level, Shluchim and Shluchos gathered together earlier this week for the 3rd annual CGI West Director’s conference.
The need for directors who are looking to bring their camps to the next level was evident, as the gathering expanded to include directors from 8 states.
Professional workshops and roundtable discussions covered marketing, program, staffing and other facets of running a great day camp were held on the expansive Silver Gan Israel campus in Huntington Beach, CA, run by Rabbi Yossi Rapoport and Rabbi Sender Engel.
Rabbi Yishai Eliefja, who flew in from Detroit, MI to attend, commented the it was “a beautiful opportunity to meet other camp directors, share tips and ideas, and be inspired to best effect our children at CGI.”
Highlights of the sessions included a workshop on best practices to expand efficacy, drive enrollment and fulfill Gan Israel’s mission from John Beitner, Standards Chair of the American Camp Association.
Participants were treated to a farbrengen with Rabbi Shimmy Weinbaum, Program Director of Tzivos Hashem International, highlighting the essential place children have in realizing Hashem’s plan.
Dr. Hilary Buff, PhD, PsyD, gave practical tips to help camp directors understand and assist staff, difficult children and emotional parents.
Rabbi Ber Rosenblat of CGI in Silicone Valley shared his methods to create an extensive schedule without stress or frustration, while Rabbi Zalmy Kudan of CGI in S. Barbara, demonstrated leadership tools to improve communication, accountability and staff training.
“I feel much more empowered and informed to run camp this year,” said Mrs. Elkie Abend of CGI of the Valley. “I have a lot more knowledge in dealing with campers, parents and staff. I would highly recommend this kinus to every director. It was organized and packed with pertinent information for every CGI director.”
Mrs. Shternie Rosenfeld of CGI Fox Chapel, PA, has a message for all CGI directors: “I was very hesitant to make this trip and the time and money commitment. I came from the East coast. It was worth it in so many ways. Come and see for yourself why!”
