“Together we are greater than the sum of our parts.” We constantly hear that by working together, by joining forces, energy and resources, we can accomplish much more than by working alone.
This November, two local organizations, the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Bikur Cholim of Crown Heights and Friendship Circle of Brooklyn will put this theory into action by joining together as one team entered into the 2011 ING New York City Marathon.
Although joining teams and sharing funds between charities is highly unusual, this joint project is in line with a history of working together. “With all the work we do together in private, it seemed like a natural next step to work together on a public project as well,” said Bikur Cholim representative Ruthie Kirschenbaum. “We are thrilled to be running with Friendship Circle, sharing a common goal of helping our community!”
Friendship Circle and Bikur Cholim’s paths cross often in their work with children with special needs and families in medical distress. “It’s an honor to be joining forces with an organization like Bikur Cholim,” said Chaya’le Eckhuas on behalf of Friendship Circle. “We know that, together, we can accomplish great things.”
The Friendship Circle and Bikur Cholim team offers a fantastic race experience, including:
Guaranteed entry into the sold-out ING NYC Marathon,
Personalized coaching by master marathoner and certified triathlon coach Chaim Backman, PT,
Guided group runs, weekly running schedules, and answers to all your running questions throughout the training period. (separate group runs for men and women),
Ongoing fundraising support, including a personalized webpage,
Personalized race-gear,
Race Day cheering section at Mile TBA,
Pre & Post-race events,
And more…
Runners can participate in honor of the Refuah of a loved one, to raise awareness for Friendship Circle and Bikur Cholim, or to turn their athletic goals into a reality.
“Help yourself become healthier,” said team coach Chaim Backman, “while making a contribution to the health of our community.”

Isn’t the point of these people running in it and working so hard to ultimately raise money for your community charities? This is how you say thank you? Why dont you put your money where your mouth is and write a check instead of your comment!!! Not a nice example of gratitude chabad. Im a bit disappointed in your harsh judgements when I only know of chabad where I live to be accepting and quite the opposite.
let me get this straight.one wants to run in a marathon,.so run.why are you taking our Rebbetzin along for the run? Run gezunterheit,it’s a free country and you can run if you like. But di you ask Rebbetzin ChayaMushka if she wants to be a part of this?To me, it seems to be the opposite of her modesty ,refinement ,class and true chassidishe upbringing.Be a man, run if you like, but don’t hide behind the Rebbetzins name to kasher your behaviour.own up, say you love and thrive on this, good for you, yay! but you have to be metaher it… Read more »
go chana leahs father!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
chana leahs friend in ever green
Do I need to qualify for a fitness level to join the team or can anyone run who wants to raise money for the charities?
If you are not able to run a marathon, thats ok, not everyone is.
But don’t knock the others who train and persevere and complete the entire race and try and come up with excuses why “you” can’t do it. Face the facts: it’s too much for you to handle. And all you want is just to get more people to sit around like you do on the sidelines and criticize.
we’re living in upside-down times. worse yet are the ‘running rabbis’ who have no sense of propriety or shame. walk in the streets on a shabbos with a tallis to make a kiddush hashem. running with the goyim – at best – simply isn’t.
1-for the men to run with all the half dressed women on the day of the marathon
2-for the women to be running outdoors b’chlal, and especially on the day of the marathon
It is dangerous to try to justify what you are doing in the name of giving Tzedaka-
it is becoming more and more common to lower levels of halacha and Yiddishkeit all in the name of Tzedaka or helping others…
You can all say whatever you want. Our Torah and halacha decides what goes, and this is simply inappropriate!
these are very special charities and causes. please continue to support them. I have never heard of charities sharing it’s really inspiring.
You need to raise $3600 you will have your own fan page that people can go to and donate on with all your information.
How much money do I need to raise to join the team?
If the team ends up with men and woman they will be coached and trained separately. Yes on the day of the event all the runners will be running in the same Marathon.
They told me training is separate – two running groups for men & women. Only run together on race day, together with tens of thousands of other people.
Does this mean that men & women will be running together? Wow, we’re really going places…places where perhaps we shouldn’t?!?
This is heartwarming to see the young women working together with true achdus in order to help people. No infighting, no competition, no politics.
This is why I support the notion that women should VOTE AND RUN for the community counsel. Just imagine how much they would accomplish!
Go from strength to strength. You make me proud.
Sincerely,
a fellow CH woman
You go, Chezky!
