The Rabbonim of the Crown Heights Beis Din, Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba and Rabbi Yosef Braun, have joined other Chabad Rabbonim in addressing how to observe the upcoming 17th of Tammuz fast on Thursday.
The Crown Heights Rabbonim have added special halachic highlights for the residents of the neighborhood.
As reported on COLlive, Chabad Rabbis in Argentina and Israel have issued letters regarding the upcoming fast on 17th of Tammuz, in the current situation, where there is concern about the spread of Coronavirus.
In Israel, the Rabbis wrote that in consultation with health experts, they ruled that the following cases are exempt from fasting:
Anyone who is sick or is a coronavirus patient, those with chronic diseases, those who are considered at-risk, pregnant and nursing women.
They added that those who are in quarantine but are not sick, as well as those who are fearful for whatever reason, should consult with a doctor who is familiar with their condition.
The rabbis of the Crown Heights neighborhood cite the letter from the Israeli Rabbonim, however, they added that “it is understood that healthy individuals must fast.”
They added: For those who are afraid that the fast will harm them, can drink 1.2 oz every 6-7 minutes.
If they must eat, they may eat a little less than an ounce every 6-7 minutes, in this way not to disregard the entire fast, and he may still recite “Aneinu.”
The Crown Heights neighborhood was hit very hard during the coronavirus pandemic, with hundreds of residents falling ill, and suffering many tragic losses.
On Monday, the Gedalia Society and Dr. Eli Rosen announced that a new case of coronavirus is confirmed in the neighborhood. They said that residents must continue social distancing and mask-wearing, and cautioned people from visiting the neighborhood from out of town.
There are no chidushim here.
The fact that pregnant and nursing women are exempt from fasting is stated explicitly in the Shulchan Aruch. So is the law that people who are sick are exempt from fasting. The only chiddush here is that healthy people who find the fast difficult may eat small amounts every six minutes.
Does anyone know if the limited drink and the limited food allowed every 6 minutes can also be combined within the same six minutes? Or its either or every six minutes? Thank you
Can be combined in the same 6 mimutes
