Chazan or Baal Tfilla? A good Baal tfilla would be insulted to be called a chazan. A good chazan would be insulted to be called a Baal Tfilla. How come? A chazan is focused on the quality of the sound produced, both in the vocal “manipulations” and the tunes(s). A piyut or an opera lehavdil get more or less the same treatment. A Baal Tfilla is focused on the Tfilla. The vocal animation and the tune (nusach) are vehicles for the prayer to Hashem. Some Baalei Tfilla are merirusdik (Czech-Hungarian style) some are ziess; and some are just plain hartzig.… Read more »

its not a contradiction to have a little respect in lubavitch – his name is RABBI BERKOWITZ not “berkowitz”
and he is a chasedeshe yid and thinks before he talks unlike you!

Berkowitz is a great Baal Tefillah, but Chazan is really stretching it.
