In an effort to salvage growing discontent with a gathering against modern technology, one of the organizers of the “Citifield asifa” met with Chabad rabbis hoping to secure the Lubavitch community’s attendance.
The Skulener Rebbe, Rabbi Yisroel Avrohom Portugal, has reportedly invited 3 Chabad rabbis to his shul on 54th street in Boro Park.
They were Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba, senior member of the Crown Heights Beis din; Rabbi Leibel Altein, Director of Heichal Menachem chassidus library and Rabbi Gedalya Oberlander of a Chabad shul in Monsey.
Their meeting followed remarks (which were later clarified) signaling that Chabad was not welcome to attend alongside modern orthodox Jews and frum women, although the event is billed for “Klal Yisroel.”
The Skulener Rebbe, the organizer with Litvish maggid Rabbi Matisyahu Salomon, spoke in the meeting about the impact of technology on the youth and the call to ban the Internet. As proof he quoted from this week’s parsha.
The Chabad visitors replied that awareness was being taught in schools with gatherings held from time to time to remind people about the dangers of shmutz on the web.
The Skulener Rebbe then recalled a Yechidus he and his father had with the Lubavitcher Rebbe at 770 Eastern Parkway and the special connection the two of them had.
