A synagogue in New York’s Catskill Mountains is being dedicated in memory of a longtime confidante of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
Reb Berel’s Shul is the new name of the synagogue in Kozy Acres, a Lubavitch populated community in the Monticello village.
It is named after Rabbi Berel Junik OBM, who passed away on the 9th of Iyar 5765 (2005), and was an aide of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson during his lifetime.
The newly renovated Shul will serve the 38 Chabad families residing in the bungalow colony. Junik’s widow Mrs. Fruma Junik spends her summers there.
Dedicated by the Junik family, the Shul can house 150 people for prayers. A kitchen will be used for the Shabbos Kiddush, frequently headed by Rabbi Laima Minkowitz and Rabbi Zusha Winner.
“Since our mother spends Shabbosim in the country and there was no Shul in our father’s memory, we thought it would be a nice start,” Dovid Junik, a real estate developer, told COLlive.
A formal dedication will take place in the summer.
An early riser, the late Berel Junik was a diamond cutter who dedicated his spare time to serving the Rebbe and Rebbetzin, being called “one of ours.”
He was chosen to accompany the Rebbe’s mother, Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, when fleeing Russia during World War II, and was registered as her son.
At the instruction of the Rebbe, he taught Sechita classes to married Lubavitch men who eventually utilized the knowledge to serve Jewish communities around the world.
