A car caught fire and then exploded at the corner of Lefferts and Troy Avenue in Crown Heights Friday night, frightening residents.
The electricity went out in a nearby building at approximately 9:40 pm, residents told COLlive, which “caused a surge in the underground transformer, which shot out from a manhole cover, reaching a parked car.”
The car then exploded, “causing a huge boom,” the resident said.
The car was destroyed by the fire, which firefighters put out.
Smoke Coming From Transformer Fire @CitizenApp
Troy Ave & Lefferts Ave Yesterday 9:40:10 PM EDT
That’s entirely nonsense. There was a transformer explosion underground which burst through and set the car above it on fire. There were popping sounds coming from the car as watched it burn by the flames consuming it, but the exploding noise was not at all from the car it was from the underground explosion that shook the entire block and flickered our lights. Immediately after the boom the car could be seen with just a small amount of flames under it, it went up in flames a few minutes later.
could have come from the car as well when the gas tank heated up, ignited and exploded. Was there also. And yes it seemed the fire department took about 15 minutes to show up after the initial explosion.
electricity was blinking prior to explosion . Then a huge explosion like a bomb and small fire under the car and on the side walk slowly consumed the car.
Firefighters came 10 minutes later. Very late…
