A Menorah lighting ceremony was hosted by Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams and the New York Board of Rabbis, held at Borough Hall Monday evening.
The event began with a moment of silence in memory of Aliza Azan obm and her 3 children, who tragically perished in a devastating house fire this morning in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Borough President Adams announced that he joins members of the FDNY, NYPD, rabbis, and Jewish community leaders in dedicating the menorah lighting ceremony to their memories.
Borough President Adams spoke about the importance of fire safety in the holiday season to ensure all families across the city implement critical measures to protect themselves from the dangers of potential hazards in their homes.
He also renewed his call for the creation of a dedicated Brooklyn-based burn unit, which he initially called for after a tragic fire in March 2015 that ripped through the Sassoon family home in Midwood, which killed four boys and three girls.
The Borough President then honored individuals who are making a difference to the Jewish community in Brooklyn and beyond through their activism and dedication to local organizations and causes.
Honorees included NYPD Chief Chaplain Rabbi Dr. Alvin Kass, Chaplain FDNY Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, and MTA Chaplain Rabbi Harry Tzvi Berkowitz.
Entertainment was by the Mezamrim Choir, who sang popular Jewish songs.
The event was coordinated by Adams’ Jewish liaison Mr. Joel Eisdorfer.
In each residance. It saves lives.
I am surprised the call for a specialist burn unit in Brooklyn wasn’t followed through 3 years ago. This is something the entire Brooklyn population should be united with and fighting for, racing to SIUH Burn Unit is insane.
