Year 6 Boys of Lubavitch Boys’ Primary school in London, England, were treated to a visit to Canary Wharf, the main business district in London, where they learned about its inception and explored how it is possible to maintain one’s Yiddishe identity in the business world.
The trip was part of their post-SATS “London Project” led by R’ Menachem Habib, where the boys are touring and exploring different areas and aspects of London weekly.
The pupils prepared for their visit with a talk by Danny Seliger, Director of Administration at Canary Wharf Management (CMG), who worked with Paul Reichman in setting up the business area.
The boys were fascinated that such a huge landmark was built within the boundaries of Jewish law of keeping Shabbos and Yom Tov, as no building work took place during those times.
They were further intrigued that there is a Sukkah erected in Canary Wharf every year. It started off providing for 10 people and now services over 1,000 people every year. Furthermore, there are annual Chanukah and Purim celebrations held there.
The talk was followed by traveling on the new Elizabeth Line to Canary Wharf and seeing the buildings and business atmosphere. After visiting the Docklands Museum, they davened Mincha in the Boardroom and heard from Rabbi Ephraim Carlebach, Alex Gold, Nosson Spitzer and Avi Silver.
“This trip was a real eye-opener for the boys; they saw how not only is it possible to work in the real world and maintain one’s religious standards, but also make a Kiddush Hashem in every aspect of one’s life,” their teacher said.
