As a reward for good behavior and impressive grades on a test given by Rabbi Zavdi – the school’s Menahel, the 8th graders of Miami Yeshiva were rewarded with a grand overnight.
Accompanied by their teacher Rabbi Smith, wildlife specialist Ray Chasser, and a few Shluchim, they traveled in a sailboat to an exotic island approximately an hour away from Miami.
When they arrived at the island, they quickly unpacked unloaded the boat and set up their tents and bonfire before dark. As night fell, they went fishing. The fish which were caught were cleaned and and grilled for supper. In addition, they enjoyed a grand barbecue with hot dogs, hamburgers, potatoes, onions, and of course marshmallows and songs.
After cleaning up their campsite in the morning, they davened Shacharis by the water and headed back on the sailboat to school. They greatly impressed their chaperon and captain, Ray, who happily agreed to put on Teffilin when asked.

Zev Mayer, if some one got the guide to put on tefillin- it could only be you! Yasher koach- now you can add “an exotic island ” to all your tefillin stories. You make your fam in a pina hanidachas proud!!

Where is this Halacha found?
Because of Tzaar Baalei Chayim. Fishing should ONLY be done with a net – which does not puncture the skin and flesh of the fish, and thus causes no pain.
Although a fish does not require shechita – it is nevertheless prohibited from killing them in such a manner that they are caused undue pain and suffering.
