At approximately 1:45 am, according to witnesses who were sitting in 770 Eastern Parkway – Lubavitch Headquarters, a black male entered with a serrated 9-inch kitchen knife, police said.
One bochur saw him and shouted at him to drop the knife, but he approached a bochur who was standing near the bima, and stabbed him once in the neck, witnesses described. Bystanders also reported hearing the attacker shout “kill the Jews.”
Flagged down by witnesses, cops then ran into 770 and demanded that he drop the knife. After a standoff with police at gunpoint, he did drop the knife, but after a few moments grabbed it again. He then lunged at the cop, who shot him in the torso.
Hatzalah treated the victim, 22-year-old Levi Rosenblatt, a resident of Betar Illit, Israel, who is learning in “Kvutza” in 770, who was taken to the hospital. He is conscious and is reportedly in stable condition. Both the victim and the assailant were transported to Kings County Hospital.
In a phone conversation with COL.org.il, the mother of the victim said, “I spoke with my son on the phone a few minutes after he arrived at the hospital. He was undergoing examinations to make sure that he is ok,” she said. “He is going to be in the hospital for the next few days so that they can give him antibiotics against infection and monitor his blood flow to make sure he has no blood clots.”
“He was stabbed beneath the ear, towards the back of the neck,” she described.
“Thank G-d in the zechus of the Rebbe, he was in the Rebbe’s home, he is ok,” she told YNet News.
Please say Tehillim for Levi Yitzchak ben Raizel for a speedy recovery.
Update 3:30 am: The stabber has died from his wounds at Kings County Hospital, NYPD confirmed.
The NYPD has informed that 770 will be closed for Shachris. Anyone that has a locker will be permitted to retrieve their belongings.
VIDEO: NYPD standoff with knife-wielding man
GRAPHIC VIDEO, VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED
barch hashem he is stil alive
That guy lives in the same place as my school
That is not a nice comment. his question was, which you cant see in the video, is, did he stab the bochur before the cops came, or did he stab him when the cops were there, at the very end, and that’s why they shot him
IN ORDER TO TAZE SOMEONE YOU MUST PUT THE TAZER ON THE PERSON YOUR WISHING TO TAZE
If anything his maniacal yelling -not only did not “frighten” the attacker, it leaned him towards being less rational (no matter how irrational he already was), and- it unnerved the officers edge (if he had one) leading to an unnecessary death (whether otherwise earned or not). The officer had ample time, opportunity and conditions to shoot him in the leg without harming anyone else. It was not clean. The officer also should not have holstered his gun or reached for cuffs until the attacker was face-down on the floor. Furthermore, did an officer also fire multiple shots into the attacker… Read more »
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not. So, job well done, I guess?
It’s pretty clear that trying to be calm and reasonable wasn’t working. He had already stabbed someone, and no one could get him to lay down the knife. By acting aggressively, the police had a chance at frightening him into submission. It indeed worked, at least initially.
As for your creative idea of shooting him in the leg, if he would missed the shot, as he likely would have, he could have a bystander with a gunshot wound in addition to a criminal with a knife.
And in the rebbe’s shul as well!
Wow you sound like a typical uneducated fool, would people say that bochur is a hero if he got stabbed? NO! People would say he was reckless and should have gotten out of there the second he saw police taking over the situation, who does he think is a hostage negotiator?! Don’t try and interfere and be a hero when there are highly trained people at the scene.
#45 It is people like your thinking that allows decent man to get stabbed!
This thug had to be killed to send a strong message to other criminals!!!
To all of u that criticize the Israeli bachur standing there. He is the one that stoped the black man from stabing other people. After he stabbed Levi Izchak dozen lay he start running after another Bochum and this bochur (the one standing there) throw a metal table on him and confronted him and spoke to him tough to stop. At this point the police came and from here u see the video So stop judging this guy stopped him! Now when u standing so close to a person with a knife u will be afraid to turn ur back… Read more »
For future reference… A calm and steady tone deescalates. From the moment the officer spoke (or yelled like a wild maniac) he escalated the situation. Showing kindness, even if it must be disingenuous (such as the fellow who was offering him food) also does. The police could have and should have shot him in the leg, considering the circumstances. This is important because, in this circumstance it was against a criminal in protection of a Shul (and those there), however, this allow for police to be just as deadly when otherwise unnecessary, even in confrontations with unarmed and/or innocent people.… Read more »
at least it wasnt the innocent bochur who was killed!!
GESHE is a mental disorder when the person thinks he is on a higher spiritual level because of someone he was related to
They did right thing
I disagree. The bochurim should’ve kept quiet and allowed the police to do what they had to do.To direct traffic and tell the police not to shoot is plain stupid. He could very easily have stabbed him also.Poor judgment and very naive. Stay away and shut up.That is more helpful in a tense situation.Did they notice the poor boy was already stabbed?
770 looks so messy seforim piled up all over the place ! Is this the way the Rebbes shul should look ? Where is the kovod for the Rebbe? Is this what the world has to see ?
Good job Cops. Thank you.
Thank you for your moral support to the police officer. You were making sure that he excercises self-restraint and pulls that trigger only if absolutely necessary. It is extremely clear from the video footage that the Israeli Bachurim did their best to calm down the perpetrator and deescalate the tense situation while possibly risking their lives. Wow! Very kind and selfless.
Thank you to the NYPD officer. I am sure it was not easy for him to pull the trigger, especially in light of all the anti-police sentiment of the elected officials and the rebel rousers. Thank you for doing your job, thank you for doing what is right, thank you for protecting our community.
Should 770 get their Mezuzzos checked?
Hashem Yerachim.
770 MUST GET SECURITY!!!
One less killer on the street!
the police shouid have shoot him again
If anything is stupid here it is your comment. Easy for u to sit back, watch the video, and judge everyone else. That bochur was there while it was happening, and it is simply amazing that although he knew BETTER THAN YOU what the situation was he didn’t want someone to die, especially since this someone seemed to be a bit insane. Thank u bochur for showing the world how much we cherish life. And thank u NYPD for doing your job right.
Moshiach NOW!!
Couldn’t have said it better. Crown Heights – Wake up!!
we just convince ourselves we r safe when we know we r not, we must say teshuva to hashem as one nation
It’s time to pack up Crown Heights and move out to Long Island.
47 – yes and it will probably be 7 7 0
bochur is now having emergency operation stop everything and say tehilim
The bochur did not get shot
Can you read?
2:00 am is not unusual for bochurim to be in 770
Especially around יט’ כסלו time..
Do you have grown chasidishe sons?
They need to get to the source of his action
What places did he frequent like Church- Mosque- Institutions-School , who is teaching all this hate must be brought to justice his home demolished and the entire family thrown out of this country. This is the only language “Education” -“Action” – “Accountability” – “Consequence” …
That bochur who people are dubbing a “hero” is absolutely not a hero he is a very silly man who was taking a massive risk, if you just saw someone getting stabbed by this man why in the world would you talk to him and try and stop him! Let the police do their work and get out of there as soon as you can…Stupid stupid people
Appreciate your true comment but what is “GESHE”?
Praying for great miracles, true light, and complete healing and redemption for all of Am Yisrael.
everyone seems to just see the physical aspect of this episode.
no one commenting here seems to give much thought to the spiritual meaning of what happened.
so much so that some person, could wonder out loud here, why the bachur was up?
these comments here could be coming from anyone, even goyim l’havdil.
there is nothing about these comments that seem unique to a yid or all the more so, a chossid!
the Rebbes shul, the Rebbes reaction, directive. nothing.
just a bunch of narishe things that the sechel of lhavdil a goyshe 8th grader can come up with.
This attacker was already known by the police for crimes since 1982.
This attacker was already known by the police for crimes since 1982.
When the guy dropped the knife, the officer should’ve immediately tackled him, or at least handcuffed him. Instead, he looked away. and then when the man went for the knife the officer backed away.
Boruh Hashem didn’t become like in Jerusalem! ! Tank you God!!
1- There should be code entry in to 770!!!
say tehilim
NOT meaning to find fault with the NYPD taking down the assailant, but any chance that the police could have “Tased” (stunned him with a Taser) the guy, and thus avoiding killing him (maybe he’s not suffering now, but I’ll bet his family is)? One has to have rachmones (where possible) on a mishugena Goy too (any way on his family).
i am surprisd
None of you know what he was.Maybe this maybe that- maybe drugs. So you prefer he does more harm so you can figure out whether to shoot or not? What is wrong with you people?Police assess the situation and this guy already stabbed someone. He was shot to protect YOU!!Get it?
This is sad. Yes there are lots of question marks on this story, but I think that there is a hallowness in everyone hearts asking what is the purpose. Years ago the mentally ill were locked up amd tortured. But as the world became a better place we learn to give more rights to people the mentally ill are given free rights unless they are suicidal or threatened to kill others. AS geshe and a sibling of one who is mentally ill I ask where is the community when it comes to mental illness.? How come special needs gets so… Read more »
I feel for the bochur that got shot, but what was he doing at 2am in the morning, he should of been sleeping, and why couldnt the police just take the knife away from the tug, because as I see in the picture there was a couple of offices, so they should of tried to take away his knife instead of shooting him, who knows Sharpton may intervence and they may just protest about the shooting
As a child I was always amazed that 770 was open 24/7 as an adult it made me anxious and now I am afraid. Combine the tense situation in the world and open hunting season on police officers makes for a volatile situation. I believe the reason the chossid said “Don’t shoot” is to publicize to the world that we are a civilized people and don’t want people shot and killed needlessly. Unfortunately the perp was mentally ill and left the police officers no choice when he ran toward the officer wielding a knife. Hopefully this video footage will alleviate… Read more »
DId events occur under the YECHI sign? What a message!
Ari Herrmann YOU ARE INCREDIBLE
and truly terrifying. we need answers – how will security be increased? these are our children!
A stabbing takes place and we all whip out our phones to picture and video it?
Have we lost the plot?
it shood be clasiified like “cop-assisted suicide” but police is realy nontrained nonprofessional(((
p.s. bachurim that make video . why risk your own life if you can’t do normal video?
The victim, Levy Yitzchok ben Raizel, is said to be in stable condition.
the yeshiva staff are not at all doing their job, why is this 22 yr old up at 2:00am , they belong in bed .
The morning seder starts at 7:00 am . see his attendance record , where is Mashgichim ?

Why dont the police have tasers???
This man sounds like he was mentally ill. Sad sad
This man could have lived, instead he chose to pick the knife up again and attack the officer. The loss of life is upsetting. Lesson: Don’t mess with police officers, they will use deadly force if threatened.
Thank you to the NYPD officers for their heroism and bravery. I hope they get medals and promotions instead of abuse and second-guessing. Refuah Shleimah to Levi Yitzchak ben Raizel.
Once someone is known to be violent do not reason with him – run away and let the police do their job. Just having a weapon in 770, let alone using it on a bochur, is reason enough for the police to shoot him.
“Look at hatzola helping him. That’s the picture the world needs to see. ”
Spread the picture! Only Jews would do this!
Learn Today’s Tanya! Empty Building message.
For black guy with no knife in manhattan too many police on top of him and strangled him, but for this guy with a knife one officer at the beginning and scared of him. This tell us police aren’t accurate.
MAY THE REBBE REVEAL HIMSELF ONES FOR ALL, YEHI ADONEINU, MOREINU VERABEINU, MELECH HAMOSHIACH, LEOLAM VAED!
ATMOSAI!
For the past two weeks, black “ministers” have been comparing ferguson and NYC to “Palestine.” one has to wonder if this assailant heard sharpton’s incitement to anti Jewish violence. Mentally I’ll? Not the assailant maybe.
You prevent gd forbid more people from being stabbed as this animal was ready to swing his knife at more people
COL i am glad you decided to show the entire videos. with a warning that discretion is needed, obviously not for children. good call.
we all need to see for three long minutes they begged the man to drop the knife to avoid another situation like Ferguson.
The bochurim should have let the officers do their work without interfering. Especially that one standing between the officer and the assailant, and started giving the officer orders – he put his life at risk for no reason (and made it harder for the cop to do his job).
Kol hakavod to the officer who tried to de-escalate the situation before pulling the trigger. We owe him our thanks for preventing more assaults.
Just wondering the stupid Israeli guy who said to the police officer “don’t shoot” he is a hamor gadol.
Officer did a great job. Justice served
Congratulations NYPD. Officer did the best he could to de-escalate the situation, and only used deadly force when his other options ran out. I don’t think he was looking at the guy’s skin color, he was looking at his weapon. My completely uneducated opinion? A good shoot.
Refuah Shleima to the victim, and Baruch Hashem a worse tragedy was averted.
Oy vey hope this doesnt lead to more riots for being killed by police!!!! 🙁
The cop is a Hero
BH
Nissei Nissim
The bochur should have a Refuah Shelaima
Bekorov
Today is a happy day.
אשרינו
Much more went right….p
In the zchus of
יט כסלו ….
And the month of Geulah
Thank you Rebbe.
Number 10 is right
How many times was he shot?
Did they shoot him again, when he was already on the floor?
The second he put the knife down the cop should have grabbed it or at least knocked it away, before holstering his weapon
With all the recent stories with cops killing blacks, this cop couldn’t do his job right. This animal just stabbed someone! The cop should have shot him right away when he was refusing to put the knife down.
We as a community should thank the cop for his work. It’s the least we can do.
Look at hatzola helping him. That’s the picture the world needs to see. One community not like david dinkins said 2 communities
The Rebbe told David dinkins so understand this person was mentally challenged and has mamish nothing to do with race
Let this be a lesson that anyone who comes into 770 to attack Jews will be gunned down.
no, this guy is not brave, he is stupid.
in such situations, you get out of the way and let the police do their work.
Kol haKavod for the bochers who try to calm the man down and convince the police officer not to kill him even though the assailant had already knived down a person.
I can’t believe the inanity of these comments. #1, you are right. But mentally ill or not, this was inevitable. ANYONE can walk in without search, including terrorists dressed as Chassidim. How would we know? At least the lowlife died in hospital & not in 770.
Name for Tehillim: Levi Yitzchak ben Raizel.
No, after the African American died he came back with Techyas Hamaysim and attacked the Bochur.
Can we have the bochurs full name for Tehillim?
No after the guy was dead
Why?
When was the bochur stabbed, before this confrontation?
Time for Israeli style checkpoints. The attacker was probably mentally ill
