The Blau family has made tragic headlines for the past two weeks, following the passing of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Blau zt”l of Jerusalem. The Rabbi died saving his teenage daughter from drowning in the Jordan River.
He was survived by 15 children, 11 of whom still reside at home, the youngest of which is under one year old. His wife, Mrs. Blau, is now single-handedly responsible for keeping her family financially afloat.
Devastated by mourning and still processing the traumatic event, the family has become desperately poor. With reportedly no money for food, clothing, or other essentials for the holiday, they have had to publicly beg for the help of strangers.
In their desperate search for meaning in the pain, the family visited the home of Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlit”a in Bnei Brak. A representative asked the Rav, on the widow’s behalf, what the family could do to strengthen themselves during this horrific time. Rav Kanievsky’s response was surprising to many.
“Be happy on Simchas Torah,” video footage [below] shows the Rav saying.
No doubt the family will do their best to find simcha during the holiday, despite their trauma, following the Rav’s highly unexpected advice.
