Chabad’s first worldwide social networking group for Shidduchim will soon be celebrating its second anniversary.
In a relatively short period of time, the instant messaging group known as “Rabbi Gordon’s Shidduchim” has already notched up an impressive tally of over 100 Shidduchim that have either directly emanated from, or are associated with the network. The network is international and has become a powerful platform to connect Chabad families across the globe.
A we reported last year, the project was launched by Faygie Herzog in memory of her father, the legendary Shliach of Chabad of the Valley, Rabbi Yehoshua Binyomin Gordon obm.
In that report Herzog remarked, “in a world of disruptive technology, from Uber to Amazon to the social networks like Facebook, why not apply some modern thought to the burgeoning shidduch crisis?”
Starting as a small networking forum for mothers and shadchanim via WhatsApp, the network now counts close to 500 active participants, and because of the increasing demand following its successful launch, Herzog is now in the process of migrating all its members to a new phone app Telegram.
“Telegram is much more user friendly to the network and allows an unlimited number of participants, alleviating the constraints that WhatsApp presented with its cap at 256 members,” Herzog explains.
The success of the group is attributed to its simplicity and relative privacy. Mothers or Shadchanim post a picture and a short profile which is only made available to members of the group.
Faygie Herzog moderates the network, giving personal care and attention to each new participant and often assisting them navigate through the entire Shidduch journey. A separate satellite group was also recently launched to focus on older individuals that are still seeking out their match in life.
