Following a number of violent incidents in the Crown Heights neighborhood, the local leadership has reached out to Mayor Bill de Blasio for support.
On Thursday, a 9-year-old Jewish boy who was riding a bike on the corner of President St. and Troy Avenue at approximately 4:00 pm was attacked by a group of 4 teenage black males, one of whom struck him in the head. He did not sustain any injuries.
On Wednesday, a 24-year-old Jewish man was attacked by three male black teenagers at the corner of Albany Avenue and Union Street at about 11:40 p.m., one of whom punched him in the face, knocking him to the sidewalk, police said.
Residents complained that Shmira volunteers had chased down a group of teens they believed to be the attackers in Wednesday’s incident, but local police officers had quickly released them.
In response, Marco Carrion, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, made a midnight visit to Crown Heights Thursday.
Community representatives Eli Cohen and Chanina Sperlin of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council requested that the mayor send a clear message of support to the police department and provide them with the necessary resources to address recent violence against Crown Heights residents.
The commissioner assured the community that he and the Mayor were available in case of any further concerns, a participant told COLlive.
The commissioner also said that he had spoken with the 71st Precinct Commander George Fitzgibbon, and was satisfied that the initial poor response to Wednesday night’s attack has been properly addressed by the precinct and would not be repeated in the future.
well in PA all Jews have guns, it is officially allowed. One guy told me that he is thinking to start carrying gun on shabbos and he was already consulting local rabbi about that. I would want to go to such shul knowing that someone can protect in a case of anything.
Excellent comment and very well put. If only everybody had your attitude and mindset, Jews would not be nearly as victimized.
lets make gun permits !
more examples of lousy Anti-American govt. friends…if u cannot make it in pvt bus. … go into govt. soon is the anniversary of The Crown Heights Pogrom (1991) ‘The first govt. supported murder of Jews in the history of the U.S. This govt. is anti G-d and morals. All they love are their paychecks and football games (Don’t forget the beer).
They know who they are.
They were in police custody so they shouldod be able to track them down very easily.
a furtive midnight visit without fanfare and a press event to show support backed up by consequences for the violaters is meaningless
So all we get is photo op?
Crown Heights has lost its Mojo, and midnight visits by the Mayor’s assistants won’t bring it back. We need to look within as to how 23 years after the Crown Heights riots we’re still dealing with the same rote problems.
How come the cops are still not going to arrest these thugs? They have a address from shmira. What the heck are they waiting for. The victim gets pinched in his face causing his side of his face to be blown up. This goes under the nys penal law as a hate crime. When two people don’t know each other and randomly goes over and knock the guy because of different color. This is a hate crime. The other week same incident were a woman got punched in the face and The thug said f– Jew. This case long gone… Read more »
This is targeting Jews who are viewed in Crown Heights as weak victims who are always trying so hard to be nice. This is the historical attitude of the police in Crown Heights to Jews- indifference and sometimes maliciousness. This is also a reflection of current global anti-semitism as spread in the media that the the local riffraff live by ..But if it makes you feel better to call it a ‘game called knock-out’ then go right ahead hiding your head in the sand.
krav maga now has a office in downtown brooklyn…..
I come from Russia and remember well how we lived among the nations. Gentile teens always punched each other to the face. Most of Jewish families in our area payed serious attention to the phisical development of the boys just to be able to protect themselves while walking home from school or when playing outside. Besides mandatory sport classes as a part of public education, most of us attended sport classes for training purposes and somehow our parents have chosen for us either box, or self-defense, or jujitsu, or freestile fight. Those of us who were able to fight back, were… Read more »
