Hundreds of fans came out to meet the famed Jewish reggae singer Matisyahu at Chabad Student Network of Ottawa where he spent Shabbat on July 17.
The event brought students who were in town as well as out of town, with some who travelled from as far as Toronto to join in the festivities.
For several students, it was the first time ever participating in a Shabbat dinner and observing the traditions of Shabbat.
The evening opened with a pre-Shabbat cocktails and photograph session followed by a candle-lighting service and a prayer service at sundown.
After the Kiddush and some gefilte fish and Matzah ball soup, Matisyahu shared some of his life experiences that led to his journey of taking on the observance of Torah and Mitzvot.
The party went on through the rest of Shabbat, with a morning service and Kiddush lunch the next day.
Feedback from students came pouring in throughout the following week.
“Friday was amazing,” wrote Rachel Guy-Levine, a law student at Ottawa U, in an email after the event, “I am so happy to have been there to be a part of it all.”
