On 25 Adar II, three young shluchim in 7th grade of Cheder Menachem Los Angeles decided to give the Rebbe and Rebbetzin a birthday present. Inspired by their grandfather, West Coast Head Shliach Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin שיחי, who never lets a day go by without mivtza tefillin, they set out to find 120 people before bais Iyar to do the mitzvah of tefillin with.
Levi Hecht of Brentwood, Mendel Newman of Beverlywood, and Mendel Teleshevsky of S. Monica got together after school and on Sundays and set out with tefillin and matzah. Some days, they were able to reach as many as 19 yidden in one location after being there for a few hours. Other days, they helped Yidden during Minyan to put on tefillin.
“One mivtza led to another,” related the boys. “One Friday while we were looking for Yidden, a homeless man stopped us and asked us if we had a jacket or sweater for him because it was supposed to be cold that night. We scooted across town to a thrift shop managed by a Jewish man, did mivtzoim there, and then got a nice warm jacket donated to bring back to the poor homeless man.”
This Sunday, they reached their goal of 120 Tefillin!
