Baila Dalfin and Nechama Shpigelman of Crown Heights have launched a business that fills an unmet need in the homecare industry.
Recare Home Services, which they created, is an innovative at-home recreational activity service designed to enrich the lives of elderly individuals, including those grappling with dementia and other neurocognitive diseases.
The formation of Recare was inspired by PlanTogether, a non-profit the duo initiated during Covid-19. During the height of the pandemic, PlantTogether sent plants to over 1,000 older adults, bringing a touch of nature and a sense of companionship to their lives.
Through this initiative, Baila and Nechama discovered a deeper, more pressing need: the millions of older New Yorkers living at home required more than just greenery to thrive—they needed engaging and stimulating activities to keep their minds, bodies, and spirits active.
This realization gave birth to Recare, a revolutionary approach to in-home recreation.
“We believe that every individual deserves access to individualized activities that promote their overall well-being,” they said in a statement. “Our team of dedicated professionals works closely with clients and their families to design customized activity plans that address their cognitive abilities, interests, and preferences.”
They incorporate a variety of sensory-based activities, including:
1. Art and Music: Engaging in creative expression through art and music can evoke memories, enhance cognitive function, and provide emotional relief.
2. Gardening and Horticulture: Building on our roots with PlantTogether NYC, we offer gardening activities that connect individuals with nature and provide a sense of accomplishment.
3. Physical Exercise: Tailored exercise programs that focus on mobility, balance, and strength help maintain physical health and improve mood.
4. Cognitive Games and Puzzles: Activities designed to stimulate the mind and encourage problem-solving, memory recall, and cognitive flexibility.
5. Sensory Stimulation: Using aromatherapy, tactile activities, and sensory-rich environments to create calming and engaging experiences.
“Our clients consistently report the profound impact our services have on their loved ones,” they said. “From rekindling a sense of youth and freedom to making them feel more lively and engaged; the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”
One woman shared how the attentive and stimulating care helped her mother, who is non-verbal, communicate enjoyment, something they hadn’t done in a long time.
