Special elections held Sunday for Vaad Hakohol – Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, the non-profit organization in charge of communal affairs in Brooklyn’s Chassidic section, enjoyed a record turnout of 2,064 votes.
Jewish male residents were able to cast their vote in the basement of 770 Eastern Parkway, with Monsey Rabbi Avrohom B. Rosenberg overseeing the process and 2 security guards on hand.
The ballot opened at 9 AM on June 13 with a choice of 13 candidates: Avrohom Benarroch, Fishel Brownstein, Zev Cadaner, Michoel Chazan, Yosef Hackner, Shea Hecht, Yosef Keller, Elie Poltorak, Meir Schreiber, Chanina Sperlin, Meir Spinner, Zaki Tamir and Aron Vogel.
Elections were also being held for Gabboim of the main 770 Shul: Mordechai Chein, Menachem Gerlitzky, Avrohom Holtzberg, Nochum Kaplinsky, Zalman Lipskier, Yosef Losh, Yoseph Mochkin, Uriel Niasoff and Yosef B. Spielman.

Committed to fair and honest reporting, COLlive.com reporters in Crown Heights updated throughout the day:
9:00 AM: Elections for Vaad Hakohol – CHJCC and 770 Gabboim officialy began. Representatives of Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba and Rabbi Yaacov Schwei are present.
9:22 AM: A mobile air conditioner and a heavy duty fan try to cool off the basement room as early voters, who just finished davening Shacharis, come in.
Benches and 12 carton boxes are lined up on tables serving as voting booths. A sign calls to “Remember, vote Leshem Shamayim.”
10:12 AM: Candidates and beggars stand on the corner of Kingston Avenue and Eastern Parkway greeting passersby – each for another cause.
Rabbi Shea Hecht is seen with Chanina Sperlin, Elie Poltorack is handing out his letter, and so is Yossi Hackner who is accompanied by his 2 year-old son.
11:17 AM: Rabbi Avrohom B. Rosenberg, the Monsey dayan who headed the special Din Torah on the communal leadership, is seen listening to Krias Hatorah in the main shul in 770.
Wearing a Talis and Rabeinu Tam Tefillin, he was hardly recognized by fellow congregants and roamed around freely (however easy it is to stroll around the packed shul on a Sunday morning and Rosh Chodesh).
Asked by COLlive.com what were his feelings, he smiled.
“No comment,” he said while glancing at his gray-colored Blackberry. “I plead the fifth.”
12:56 PM: “This is a record breaking turnout,” Noochie Gross, member of the nomination committee, told COLlive.com.
He said exactly 701 registered voters already cast their vote.
1:48 PM: These elections are running without any auditory comission (both sides instead are present there), two security guards are seen at the entrance and exit of the voting room.
David (a non Jew) and Uria (an Israeli) wore badges of Security USA Inc., an Israeli owned firm.
“Were just here to keep order,” Uria told COLlive.com after being asked what his mission entailed.
And with all the seemingly heated discussion infused in these elections, Uria notes: “This is more quiet than any elections in Israel.”
3:51 PM: Some 1,172 people voted as light rain starts coming down and the streets empty out.
Reb Shmuel I. Popack, an elder real estate owner, told COLlive.com as he was exiting the voting room, “I voted for the Jews.”
Asked to be specific, Popack said: “I first have to see who won to say who I voted for.
4:23 PM: A steady flow of 10 to 20 people keep coming in. Rabbi Rosenberg, supervising throughout the day, takes a break and goes upstairs for Mincha. He asked 1 of his 2 side-kicks to guard the ballot.
7:19 PM: Voting numbers are holding at 1,665 and a pundit tells COLlive, “this is before the Mincha-Maariv influx of people who return from work or a day with the family.”
He said he expected the general tally to reach 2,000 plus by the end of the day.
8:08 PM: Aside from the failing air conditioner unit, everything is progressing smoothly. Even Rabbi Yoel Kahn and Rabbi Yehuda Krisnky came down to vote without any obstacles.
1,769 voted so far out of an estimated 2,500 eligible voters (1 per household).
9:24 PM: An all-time high of 1,924 people have voted with close to 30 minutes left until the ballot closes.
The election committee is saying that whatever the result, the turnout will give the winners a clear and real mandate.
9:45 PM: Giving perspective, we checked our archives: 1208 voted in the 2005 elections, 924 people voted in the controversial 2009 elections.
2,003 have voted so far, COLlive was told.
10:04 PM: Official numbers are in – 2,064 residents voted. The count starts now and is expected to take about 3 hours.
10:36 PM: There needs to be a minimum of 3 elected members for the Vaad – CHJCC and a maximum of 7 (meaning there should be a run off).
According to the community council’s bylaws, the minimum to be elected is 50% of the vote which means over 1000 votes. But there are expected to be some disqualified ballots (blank papers or papers with writing of any sort) which would lower the percentage.
11:22 PM: From the counting so far for 770 Gabboim, Avrohom Holtzberg, Menachem Gerlitsky are in the lead with Zalman Lipsker close behind.

>>> Crown Heights residents, tell us who you voted for today and why, in the comments below:
Rabbi Shea has helped out my family a great deal. He has only done it with care for each person and not to get himself anywhere in life. Someone sent out a letter telling people not to vote. and beshmutz his name. whoever you are are just an anti shea supporter. I lived out of New York my enitre life till I got married and moved here so my children could have a lubavitch chinuch unlike the one I got. I find Crown heights to be a disgrace. Most of you waited online to get dollars and ran to hear… Read more »
I dont think that woman necessarily have to vote. Rather, a household should vote. Meaning, that a woman has the right to cast the ballot.
The problem is this: it would create issues in shalom bayis
but i think it does either way.
I discussed the elections with my husband and WE agreed who to vote for and he put in OUR vote
WHY ALL THE NEGATIVITY? Take something that The Rebbe considered holy and important and a lot of what we see here in the comments is negative. SHAME. This is not representative of chassidus or yiddishkeit. I only hope that the negative comments are not coming from the toshvei hashchunah.
I think you are making a very valid point and this should be addressed.
You might just have to join reform if you want the rest of the rights that are demanded now-days.
To #39 You must be new to Crown Heights or relatively young. This issue was brought up in the past, by a group who were seeking to invalidate the vaad hakohol. They took it to court.. the result was that there was a referendum, in which all of Crown Heights took part – all woman as well – and you know what? The overwhelming majority of WOMAN voted that the elections should be held exclusively for men. This is the history. So now, it is perfectly legal according to the United States law. The WOMEN ELECTED to conduct themselves –… Read more »
to #37 (and all who agreed):
sometimes mocking the way something is run turns out to be a show of ignorance.
the chairman of the board is not always the one with the most votes. he chosen by the elected board members after all the results are in. the board members divide all the various jobs.
to #120
if i’m not mistaken, this is part of his job as the dayan, to oversee the elections etc.
the elections are for positions in a religious corperation, not a goverment, corpate bylaws can do an may descriminate, against women in order to establish and control shares int he company that we all are given equilly with out paying and recieving a stock cirtificate, if that were the case poor people in crown heights would not b able to vote in the elections becuse the caust would be prohibitively high, as it is now since you must be married or over 30 to vote, or in the case that you are a male, single, over 30 but live in… Read more »
Women aren’t the only ones excluded from having a say. Unmarried men under 30 can not vote, either. Are we saying a married twenty-two year old male is more capable of making this decision than a single twenty-nine year old or a female fifty-year old?!
It might be time to rethink the protocols of old…
“The Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution prohibits each state and the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote because of that citizen’s gender. It was ratified on August 18, 1920.”
It is now 2010…I believe this now applies to local governing bodies as well.
If we want every member of the community to be involved and respectful of it leaders, then every member must have an equal say in who those leaders should be.
Yeah, why should women have a vote, you men have done such a bang up job with the CHJCC, we don’t need to have any say.
unless its the 4 that are in now with michoel chazzan,it cant ever happen
We all know that its the media who can make or break a person, a country etc, just look at how the media destroys Eretz Hakodesh. Its up to U as well COL and all other web sites. Please DON’T post any negative comments anymore. Thank you VERY much.
whoever wins…..PLEASE……be eidel and emesdik. PLEASE think clearly and honestly. PLEASE follow the Rebbe’s ways, PLEASE represent us in a manner we can really be proud of ….PLEASE keep in mind that we’re connected to the world and everyone needs to benefit from the right kind of Crown Heights. Not power trips, not bottom feeder legalizers.
PLEASE?? In the end, we vote, and then whomever wins, wins, and its up to those people to really do what they can. We all have deficiencies, but really, but PLEASE do the emes best.
PLEASE.
voted for Hecht, tamir, hackner and sperlin. gaboim voted for motchkin, losh,gerlitzky…..i like unique combos.
btw….who did the times endorse??
We need to stop posting negative comments. it doesn’t help us. Lets get serious.
the norm was about 1100-1200 votes and they got 926 not bad for a (single day and a) contested election
dont forget that by the segal raitport zirkind election (on the first day there was only 400 votes! and after a week) they only had 920 votes!
Unfortunately today another young soul has been taken away from our midst (for reasons unknown to us). Please let us all take upon ourselves the hachlata that we will not speak any loshon horo and not write any loshon horo. Its past due that we get our act together regardless of tonight’s results.
i voted for the original 4 and my reason is because this is the first time we saw some kind of movment in a good direction in along time they worked hard and did what everyone said was imposible
Who did the jewish press endorse?
Go Chanina
How long will it take to find out the final results? Tonight? Please find out.
The current voting protocols issues a SINGLE vote to each household. Since according to yiddishkeit, eizehu isha kesheira haose’h rtzon ba’ala, it would follow that the voting should be done by the ones with the mandate for picking the vote, the men.
I do think that the new Va’ad should give voting rights to single mothers, or allow them to appoint a proxy.
Just my thoughts.
before any one goes to speak about anybody think of what your saying its lashon hora and imagine if your one of these ppl that ppl are voting for and they read your comments and before long theirs a HUGE machlokes because one person said a little lashon hora and it spread from one person to the next and half of the lies may not even be true think its time to just stop and think if what your going to comment is loshon hora or not u want moshiach then stop the lashon hora just stop
When did you become G-d’s assistant/spokesperson to say when or why bad things happen??!!
The board said that 900 votes was the norm??????????
Whatever happened to what the Rebbe said that only men should vote?
With Rabbi Rosenberg personally supervising the elections it must have cost way above 10,000 (probably close to 20,000) for this elections. I wonder where all the money is coming from?
they really helped my family
it will solve qall problems i dont think the rebbe is happy with what is going on in our community
who will clean up the mess all over kingston? Garbage is strewn everywhere!
I guess this is the first job for the new vaad
we hsould vote for the ROSH HAKOHOL direct, if not, we may get another nut for the next three years.
you may get up in the morning and find out that your ROSH HAKOHOL is a 29 year old, aithough non who did vote for him meant that.
Excellent point.
Abysmal examples.

Hecht – for being a man of action
cadaner for being a mentsch
hackner representing me (the young guys)
sperlin for his connections
spinner – we need a level headed man
i didnt vote for gaboyim
Bringing about change by making things so bad that they forced it, is not exactly a feather in the vaad’s cap!
We need a vaad that can keep themselves as far away from the rabbinical infighting as possible. While the current vadd gets commended for bringing us to where we are, they are unfortunately burned by what they did, and can not act in good faith in a total post-partisan manner when one of their members is on every court paper supporting rabbi Shwei. We need a vadd that can leave politics in the past and focus on getting jobs into the community, and on fixing up what is broken in the office on Kingston Ave, so that CH’ers dont have… Read more »
Why are the only cadidates for gabboim in 770 a group loosely termed meshechisten.
I sense that the people not sharing that outlook feel that even if they were voted in they would not have any opportunity to have there suggestions implemented.
I would ask the new Gabboim, if that term makes any sense; to create an atmosphere where all Chassidim once again feel that 770 is their home
dont shame yourself
dont shame yourself publically
Who was successful at bringing ALL sides together to a din Tora?
Don’t you think it a huge accomplishment? I do.
I believe they truly deserve our vote. They take action. They achieve.
I voted for Brownstein, sperlin, poltrac and cadaner
I LOVE HORAV SHEA HECHT.
vote for goldy she has a lot of expierience
To those calling for “change”: What do you want changed? Do you not like the difficult road to peace that has begene? Does it bother you to no end that for almost a year we have not witnessed public fighting between Rabbi’s Osdobo and Shwei? WE DON’T NEED CHANGE (OBAMA!), what we need is continued success to the brave job begun by Poltrak, Bronstein, Chanina and Kadaner. They have done the difficult (and dirty) work that no one has been able to do! Of course when you enact change, you ruffle some feathers, and not everyone is thrilled with you… Read more »

weird head coverings , beards. etc I think that even though the capacity of leading and doing a good job is the most important thing in an election, nevertheless, those positions should be filled by people that are committed Chasidim, so weird colored yarmulkes, hats, and not having the minimal commitment to have a normal growing beard, for example should be an automatic disqualifier. To understand what I’m saying take it to an extreme: for example if most of the electorate would not be frum or somewhere in between, there is a big chance that the vaad hakohol would completely… Read more »
I just proudly voted and I hope many people voted my way. The truth is the mood outside 770 is very tense and it’s said to see that there isn’t anyone keeping things a little more me’suder. It’s the Rebbe’s shul and people are shouting at each other right in front of the entrance.
It just so happens that the two people I saw yelling were yelling for one side. Since I wrote get into Loshan Hora here I won’t say which, but it just re enforced who I voted for.
Are you out of your mind? Since the last elections and with the commencement of the Din Torah (almost a year!) did you/we witness ANY public fight between Osdobo & Schwey? The 2 netzigim? The answer is: NO! In my opinion, these fighting strongly against the current, sitting (new) Vaad CANT STAND QUITE AND PEACE, they long for the days when every other day there were opposing letters from the 2 Rabbonim. When the fight was very public and sucked in the majority of the community. These people get very board when it’s peaceful, they want CHANGE, to go back… Read more »

I didnt like the current vaads choice for gabbi. that indvidual used a public forum to curse out and embarras another canidate. solely for that reason i dont want to have anything to do with that party. how can a older person stoop so low is beyond me. I’m confused.
Why is cleaning up the situation – by making opposing parties go to a Din-Torah and sort out their problems once and for all – why is this something we need to ‘change’?
Why do we need to ‘wipe the slate clean’ from people who don’t just talk – but actually produce results in merely one year?
If your intention is peace, respect and stability in this community, how can you not vote for poltrac, sperlin, brwonstein and cadaner?
What in the world are you smoking? Huh? and would you identify yourself please?
If you are not joking, but rather searious about the way you think, I suggest you seek profesional, I mean very profesional help.

You may not have liked the methods the last vaad (brwonstein poltrac sperlin cadaner) used to force both fighting sides to come to the table and submit to a din torah.
But they got the results. There was a din torah, disputes were resolved al pi din torah.
They got the difficult job done.
The Vaad who served this past year (they are pretty NEW!), achieved what many (myself included) believed to be the impossible. The forced ALL sides to submit (not to them, but) to a Din Torah to resolve the terrible fighting that was taking place for several years with no end in sight. Is this a bad thing or a good thing? To all those fighting them: please explain to me why you think it is bad that there was a Zabl”a of 5 Rabbonim, resolving the disputes between Rabbi’s Osdobo & Scwei? Why is it bad that they forced a… Read more »

People have sent out letters putting down Shea Hecht. It is disgusting to talk loshon hara about another yid!!! Do not call yourself a G-D fearing jew!!! You are totally against what the rebba was about. There are far more important things to worry about in this community. THE ONLY WAY TO CLEAN UP CROWN HEIGHTS IS IF WE ALL MOVE OUT!!!!! Rabbi Shea is a good man and to beshmutz his name is outrageous. I voted for the NEW, CHANGE WE ALREADY HAVE for this past year.

You must be pretty young. The WOMEN of Crown Hights have VOTED some years ago in a court-ordered referendum.
They voted almost unanimously. That the elections should be according to the Ratzon of the Rebbe and Torah, and women should NOT vote.

I want Menachem Gerlitsky to be Gabba of

I am voting for Bronstein Sperlin Cadaner Poltrak Chazan. I believe we need to give more time to proven success! (in bringing a din torah to deal with many of the causes of the fighting).
They are New, the only served one year – and if you consider solving problems according to torah – success, well then they seem to have been VERY successful…
(Written by Chaim Hershkop. Repeat of the speech my Rov Rabbi Moshe Bogomilsky said over this past Shabbos). This past week I purchased a newspaper. Not just any newspaper, I purchased the “Yated Ne’eman”. This newspaper is about 140 pages with additional 30 pages inset. The newspaper is written by heavy “Misnaged”, a Misnaged who is not too fond of Lubavitch. Reading the newspaper from side to side, I have not seen one mention of Gimmel Tammuz nor the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Poltorak, Cadaner, Brownstein and Sperlin. Why? Because they’ve made this vote possible by restoring democracy and bringing about the Din Torah. Seeing how much they’ve accomplished in one year, I look forward to seeing how much they can do in the next 3 years!
Hecht is not allowed to be running!! The only reason he is there is because otherwise the Mashloikes would’ve become even bigger! He is not allowed to be running because he runs an organization-NOT ALLOWED!
If you want fresh, new blood and positive change, then the only proven way is to re-elect the Vaad that was elected less then 1 year ago – ALL NEW FACES! (besides Chanina). the came into office amid a bitter, brutal war, and they managed to force all sids to submit….. NOT TO THEM (and their power and control), but rather to submit to TORA! and all should go to an impartial Din Tora! To these making a big stink about women voting.
You are probably young. This was brought up over 20 years ago, they got the government/courts involved. at that elections, women were aloud to vote and a referendum was held if women should vote or not. the WOMEN CAME OUT EN-MASS and voted that the elections should be held Al-Pi-Torah!!!!
and you know what, the women of crown hights proved to the world that TORAH and Torah alone rules.
Moshiach Now!
My vote probably would’ve been somewhat different but Katzman & co’s “New Crown Heights” really rubbed me the wrong way.
I actually like some of the new guys and I’m not crazy about all the incumbents but that campaign really turned me off.
If you really believe in what your saying be open and honest about it. Don’t hide behind a facade of a grassroots push for “new blood” and “change” when your actual agenda is anything but.
How in the world do YOU know who is the “FRUMMEST” of this group ?? Unfortunately, appearances really can be deceiving …. Only Hashem ( and a person’s wife & children ) know who a person REALLY is ! WE NEED MOSHIACH NOW !

Can someone please tell me how it would be a violation of either halacha or tznius to have a separate voting station for women? What exactly is wrong with the idea of women having a chance to voice their opinion on matters that pertain to their children’s chinuch, matters of common communal concern, and especially on choosing a third Rov, whom these very women will probably call with shaalos more often then their husbands? I realize that the original voting by-laws set up in 1986 bar women from voting, but there is ZERO reason why they shouldn’t be revised at… Read more »

How do you determine who is truly the frummest?
It is a halacha issue. Women cannot be gaboyim, rabbis or leaders of the community. The rambam (and others)writes that for all areas of s(h)erarah rulership women are excluded. Voting in those elections is also problamatic. The rebbe set that rule in the first elections
Yes looks like we are down to sticking our heads into brown boxes, why not what ever would bring us Simcha, let us all laugh together.

Yes you are correct.
Women’s suffrage.
We belong to the new-Chabad. More Western culture than Jewish.
Right on. To the future.
Blessings for a shidduch and koshereh kinder.
He said it all yesterday.
He will see to it that there is a new Rov who is approved by both current members of the BDTz.
He will? Or We will?
Who can be approved by both? Someone who is not threatening to either.
That’s a low bar for the vacancy. The lowest common denominator – and less. No competition. What a future.
Vote fresh.
New faces.
Vote for change.
Change in the way things are done.
Vote for transparency.
Vote Obama?
Doesn’t anyone learn?
this whole thing is too funny..being that I am a girl I really dont have a say…but all I CAN say is that if any official person got a whiff of this, that there was a voting taking place and only MEN are allowed to vote, well….talk about discrimination. What ever happened to womens sufferage?
Vote for Shea. Please vote for shea – he is the only one who really knows what he is doing.
So get out there, come to bais moshiach and vote for shea hecht. Vote for shea!!
vote for shea hecht. Vote for shea!!!vote for shea hecht. Vote for shea!!!!
Elie Poltorak did the most for this election! I’ll definantly be voting him back in!
what went on purim night during megillah reading was attrocious ; i lost some hearing on one ear due to the excessive and loud instruments which the gabboim allowed; we need new leadership!
why hold an election when the rebbe is on the verge of revealing himself l’ain kol?

I wrote a comment here as soon as the elections were announced we will only move forward if we elect people with no baggage and no past machlokes. I think in the recent weeks my point has been proven. Whether its R’ Shea or R’ Poltrack or R’ Sperlin … Machklokeis will always follow because there is history of it there. Let’s vote for Yossi Hackner and Bennaroch, Vogel … these are guys with no past machloskis who only want to “help out” their community and do right by the schuna. Let’s vote out MACHKLOKES and vote in NEW BLOOD/FRESH… Read more »
This present vaad, Bronstein, Sperlin, Cadaner and Poltrak, are NEW. They are still in their FIRST YEAR,
שנה ראשונה
Cadaner
Polterak
Brownstien
Sperlin
Chazan
Its a vote for the continued peace!!!
Voting for someone with a conflict of interest just because he’s a nice guy is naive! Use your votes wisely…
I wish the Tamir ticket every success. they get MY vote! as for Gabboyim…is any one going to get rid of the Tsfatim? I don’t think so. They want to make it a place where people are happy to daven? Start by making Sholom with Aguch & in the words of Losh…where EVERYONE feels at home. So far, that ain’t happening! I will NEVER daven there, haven’t for years, & I won’t bring my children to see the fights & abuse & crazy behavior (shvils) that go on. And my guests? Never in a million years! I am ASHAMED of… Read more »
Poltorak, Sperlin, Brownstein, and Cadaner have changed our community for the better in every way. It is so sad that there are some elements in our community that seek only to destroy–they can’t handle the current vaad’s success so they churn out pages of lies against them, even though they know there is not a shred of truth in their allegations. It’s easy for them because not one of them are running–so they just have to fight against instead of fighting for. I think the facts on the ground and the results of the din torah speak for themselves. Poltorak,… Read more »
