Ocala, Florida, is home to the oldest standing temple in Florida and one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the state.
While there is a rich Jewish history in the city, going back over 100 years, there was no recorded Orthodox bris in the city’s records until now.
On Friday afternoon, 8 Sivan – May 21st 2010, the first Orthodox bris took place in Ocala, for Menachem Mendel Hecht, the son of Rabbi Yossi and Chanie Hecht, Shluchim to Ocala and the surrounding communities of Marion County and the Villages.
Many local community leaders and members attended the ceremony. The Mohel was Rabbi Yochanon Klein of Coral Gables, Florida, and the Sandek was the child’s grandfather, Rabbi Benjy Stock of Crown Heights.
Also in attendance were the child’s grandfather Dr. Chaim Hecht of Chicago, IL, Rabbi Berl Goldman of Gainesville, Florida and Kasriel Shemtov of Crown Heights.
