A kosher bakery in Upstate New York is opening a branch in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights section and promising to make waves.
Gombo’s Heimish Bakery in South Fallsburg, NY, is leasing the store front at 328 Kingston Avenue and scheduled to open January 4, 2010 under the CHK supervision.
“Crown Heights deserves and can really use a bakery like this,” owner Levi Gombo, a Williamsburg resident and Boyan Chossid, tells COLlive.com.
“I see many (Crown Heightsers) running to Williamsburg and Boro Park on Friday,” Gombo said Wednesday as he visited the Lubavitch and Caribbean – American populated neighborhood.
“Why should they have to go there. We can give them a delicious and good bakery?”
Montreal-born Gombo opened his Catskills bakery 9 years ago, and is frequently visited by many of the Lubavitch families there for the summer months.
But his connection to Chabad dates back to his childhood when his father took him to Farbrengens of the Lubavitcher Rebbe at 770 Eastern Parkway.
“I got kos shel bracha wine 13 times and have 7 dollars from the Rebbe,” he boasts.
“We used to come a lot to Lubavitch and I know Rabbi Kuti Feldman and Shmuley Laine from the Chabad House on 5th and Bedford which my father donates to.”
Gombo says plans to open in Crown Heights began 6 years ago when he asked to lease the same location but was answered that it was not available.
Other bakeries operating in the neighborhood include Kingston Bake Shop and Albany Bakery. Empire Kosher supermarket operates one as well.
“I didn’t find a ‘hot spot’ and would not open in any other location. Lately, a friend told me this became available,” Gombo says.
Gombo added that he was already approached by Gabboim of local Shuls and 2 caterers inquiring about his services.
“We’re going to have our famous Challah, kokosh cake, home style rugelach and the sweet rolls (which women and girls just love!), a variety of cakes and birthday cakes which you almost don’t see in any other store.”
COLlive was told that a website is in the making, offering Shluchim and out-of-towners to order fresh baked good and receive them the following day anywhere in the U.S.
haha!! levi rugelich are yummmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m love bakery stuff. but I – and I think many people- MUST stay away from TRANS fats (PARTIALLY hydrogenated etc…).
THIS will determine my -and perhaps many others’- patronage of your store.
Wishing you much Hatzlocha.
Since when is a coffee 50 cents? That’s long gone!!!
please before you say masig gvul sit down & learn some shilchun aruch
Can you bake HEALTHY breads and cakes? Is there a substitute for sugar? I mean a healthy substitute.
no ?
Will everything be baked fresh on premises??
What’s up guys let me tell you the challah @ empire is good but they are bringing it from korens bakery and they rebake it the cake is nothing spa. I hope gombos will bake it from scratch like he bakes in the country that challah is something spa.and I love that runny kokosh cake and the rugelech is the best we can’t wait let’s go we wanna smell it
i h hope they wear gloves and dont touch the food with the same hand they touch the money. hatzluche rabbe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am sorry to say that we have gone a long way down of we were thought about what life is al about. we have been learning chasidus etc when we were in yeshiva and even now learn chitas but it does not effect our life and we going down, all we see hoe MEGUSHEM WE ARE GETTING. i understand that some times people like some thing nice to eat but to express oursleves the way the comments are coming it shows how LOW we went..
with the help of above let our learning dictate our lives..
hope the stuff is good
Its a mitzvah to bake your own challah
try empire kosher
and
the shuk when it opens (I”H soon)
what is the prob with everyone
you are all carbed out
Kingston bake shop is not a bakery anyway, its some sort of everything but bake shop. I am tired of people speaking of Hasagas Gvul. It doesn’t exist in this country. Reb Moshe paskened based on the Jewlery Exchange on 47 th St and the Garment District on 37 th St. that we are not taking away by opening more of the same in close proximity, being that in NY there are millions of people and everyone travels everywhere to get things. so if someone would go to BP and now they are buying on Kingston that is not Masig… Read more »

I’m looking forward to a good bakery with CHK, yes thanks. I do not buy the baked goods that don’t have CHK.
I thought that EK’s stuff comes from Gombo’s? Not?
Hatzlocho Raba
and no it’s not for sale, sorry
right smack in the middle between yossi duchmans miami beach and sholom lipskers surfside, there is heaven on earth called abrahams bake shop. beleive me, us floridians have nothing to be jealous of.
i agree with 43. just take a look at what a response there is over a story about a new bakery! 60 people so far have found it important to comment about how great it would be for us all, if only we could get that suckulent cream-puff and that real hungarian kokosh, etc etc. right here in the hood. man, how low we have stooped.
great news. not becuase gombo’s necessarily makes great stuff, some is good and some isn’t. but becuase there’s no real bakery here, period. all the bakeries and stores here sell either something baked somewhere else, or for some basic rolls – the dough made somehwere else and then baked here. i hope gombo-ch will make a lot of stuff, fresh, from scratch, here. and stick just to baqkery and nt expand and then get distracted by adding grocery items. i will certaily wlecome theproducts and try them. oh, and i could not care less whether the hashgacha is OK, or… Read more »
nothing is better than home made challos
“…only bochurim who think dirt is part of what they eat.”-
What a completely ridiculous and mean statement.
Thank you COL for making us jealous… Job well done!!
that the ???? i think they should know anyone is welcome in CH!! i cant wait to try out this bakery. and stop all that shi… because it has nothing to do with eating donuts and saying tanya
perhaps you have been living in the cave, but the service in albany bakery both on albany and on kingston is the worst. always out of everything, from bread in the morning to doughnuts on chanukah not to mention you can wait on line for 30 minutes to pay 50 cents to the cashier for a coffee and then met with a perpetual angry mean disposition that makes you want to run. so in closing, the above reflect a hope, a hope that perhaps now we will get the haymishe service we crown heights residents deserve. so please go easy… Read more »
I AM TRULY DISAPPOINTED ALL OVER A BAKERY ITEMS AND WHAT ABOUT SUPPORTING BUSINESS HERE IN CH? WE NEED OUTSIDERS COMING IN AND TAKING BUSINESS AWAY FROM OUR OWN – WHO ARE NO DOUBT FEELING THE PINCH LIKE WE ALL ARE. NO WAY, I DONT CARE HOW GOOD HIS BAKERS IS LICKING MY FINGERS EVEN AFTER I HAVE FINISHED THAT ECLAIR ??? WHAT HAPPENED TO EVERYONE? I DONT USE THIS TERM EVER BUT IT IS REALLY APPROPRIATE HERE OMG!!! I AGREE WITH THE PERSON WHO SAID TO LEARN TANYA. THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD TEACHERS ON LINE, FIND THE ONE… Read more »

the food is baked out side of the neighborhood and is not like the stuff you can buy in Willytown
Good luck111111
You made me laugh!!
I hope business is good for the others.
But how are his prices??? i find the bakeries here to be very expensive indeed
Empire bake shop is simply awesome and Yoely is a wonderful person, fantastic baked goods a good solid hechser, and friendly service…. gombo lowens ch bake shop do the same and you’ll all have success
He seems like a real nice guy. We wish him hatzlacha.
have we as a community become so megushem? just reading some of the above comments about a gishmaake shtick kokosh can make one ooozzzz with delite.
“OH YA BABE”…….THAT’S AN AWESOM SEVEN LAYER…..
ENJOY!
A PEREK TANYA ANYONE? YUMMMMY.
see today’s chitas!
you can say waht u like about kingston bake shop but they have at least 2 bakers on site and a caterer!! so their stuff is store made.
I hope all the bakeries have parnassah and do well!
This may put an end to Bakery’s ridiculous price gouging
Now that was a Bakery…..Lowen’s had the main bakery on Rogers Avenue and on Kingston they sold their baked goods.
They had the best cream puffs, the best Boston Cream Pies and best Challah……NOW THAT WAS A BAKERY.. THE BEST EVER!
Will this bakery offer jobs to locals or will they be paying mnimum wage (and below…) and only hire African Americans and Hispanics?
It’s about time someone opens a bakery that actually bakes. Kingston bake shop albiet a much need improvement to Albany’s two locations (which gave up on the bake side a long time ago and would rather sell Liebers cookies and yogurts) is not an actual bakery, Kingston bake shop is a store that sells baked goods from sterns or one of those other wholesale bakeries and does not have any distinct character or taste, the fact that they installed a sushi stand really brought them down to a “sell anything” store front. I hope this guy knows what he’s doing… Read more »
baking your own challas. It’s a big mitzva and saves you dollars.
There’s nothing better than the smell of fresh challas being baked on erev shabbos.
Crown Heights is growing and can easily support another bakery.
let the professionals do what they do best!!
leave the herring to the Russians ,and the KoKosh to the Hungarians and will all be happy!!!
i cant wait to start shopping there.
I always shop at empire kosher supermarket and the bakery department is really impressive , from the service to the selection and being the fact that i can get all my groceries in one place i really love it.
I tried every bakery in CH including empire kosher – absolutely NO ONE excells in goods bakery stuff, danishes, cakes – all are horrid at best – challahs? FORGET ABOUT IT – no one…and I tried over and over……I am so thrilled – this is wonderful news. Thanks COL for making my day !!
just what crown heights needed, another bakery! as if there were not enough to choose from. the bakery on montgomery and kingston has a great selection, service is second to none with a smile and you can get great sushi and other foods as well. do we realy need feed our taaves by having access to the fancy and fatening cream etc. this new establishment will (perhaps…we’il see) bring. and…what indeed about hasogas gvul? is there not more that enough bakeries to service our community? taking bread (ha) out the mouths of children of existing baker owners is no fun… Read more »
I think we should rather give Parnasa to local CH residents…(eventhough the Challa of Kingston Bake Shop taka does not taste good)…. By the Way: Albany Bakery Challa DOES tast deleicous..
i shop at Gumbos in the country during the summer time and i must say that his products are from the best around.
i bet he will do very well at that location!!!
the sweet rolls and the kokosh cake from this bakery is unbelivable…..unresistable, and they are actually very sweet pepole, im sure there going to have great costomer service.
its about time we in crown heights get to enjoy real Hungarian baked goods!!! i am so looking forward to shopping there.
hatzlocha rabbah!!
I wait on a very long line at his bakery in the country, his stuff is the BEST, worth evry penny. i can’t wait.
Gevaldig
This is awesome!!!! for all those who afraid of losing business, this will assure that you upgrade you business model to actually accommodate the community. There is no reason that Crown Heights residence have to travel all the way to Boro park to get good heimishe ge’bachts, I for one am very excited!!!!!
I think we should open at least 15 more bakeries.
Do you live in a bubble. Have you ever been to Kingston Bake Shop?
Why is all the bakery equipment in before the construction is finished?
Maybe Satmar/Ungarishe Chasidim Have better Lagistiks in running Eateries
why another bakery? we need a supermarket
Looking forward! Welcome
its simple…for years and years many just have no choice and buy challahs that are a SHAM and borders on YUCK.. Those with means drive to BP, Flatbush or Willi – Its about time CH shops stop taking advantage, and think “they’ll buy it regardless” attitude. I myself insisted on Gombo challahs all summer no matter what – a few times we drive to BPduring the year, to buy them but evevryone knows on a Fri what BP is like sooo we resign to the fact…… That said, I wish him lots of luck – many will buy by him… Read more »
He better take Credit Crads to survive unlike his upstate place which is cash only
We need Simply Sushi from the mountains to come to ch to! The best sushi!
Don’t know where u we’re shopping but isaacs bakery makes great muffins. And empire kosher, no words to describe their challahs, kokosh cake, cheese Danish…..we use to go to Willie but not anymore!
the shuk is also planning a big bakery section with lots to impress i really do hope it’s not masig gevul!
and how about some jamaican patties for our Carribean neightbours???
we can`t wait♦
Please start making EDIBLE baked goods here in the shchunah……something which hasn’t been available for almost a decade
That oven has to be one of the filthiest I’ve ever seen. If this is what he’ll install I don’t see too many balbabustehs buying there…only bochurim who think dirt is part of what they eat.
There goes the diet!
i warn u! even though crown heightsers are used to eat ….(no good food) bc they are praving hiskafia. it better be clean ALL the time for me and my freinds to walk in! bc this was my plan for this spot as well.
i hope we will now get some customer service in ch bakerys.
He would have more customers (from Crown Heights and from Shluchim) if he also had the OK Hechsher.
i hope he doesn’t take away business from the others.
a danish is a danish, but please don’t put nobody out from business.
noooooooo way!!!!gombos is the best bakery by far!cant wait!
i go only to kingston bake shop
“as he visited the Lubavitch and Caribbean – American populated neighborhood.”

i cant wait to see what youll have to offer!
