The Crown Heights Jewish Community Council held an awards ceremony Tuesday at which awards were presented to Police commanders and community affairs officers at the 71st Precinct, Brooklyn Patrol Boroughs North and South and the Commissioner’s Community Affairs office.
Awards were also presented to State Senators Adams and Sampson and Assembly Member Karim Camara, to the local City Council Members, and to the managers of Community Boards 8 & 9.
A diverse crowd of community leaders was in attendance, including the Presidents of Downstate Medical Center and Medgar Evers College, and senior executives of Kings County Medical Center and Kingsbrook. Members of the Community Boards, including District Board 9 president Jacob Goldstein and District Board 8 leaders came to support their honorees, Pearl Miles and Michelle George.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Assemblyman Karim Camara, State Senator John Sampson, who is the leader of the Democratic Majority in the NY Assembly, and council Members Mathieu and James, spoke warmly of their affection for the District and their appreciation of the distance that the community has come since the dark days of racial discord and international headlines. Dr. John LaRosa of Downstate told of how Crown Heights has become an international example of harmony and communities uniting for the common good.
Several of the Speakers praised the police officers for their dedication and commitment to public safety and respect for all members of the community.
