There has been an interesting development in the official recognition of a Smicha rabbinical ordination document, COLlive was told.
For many years, universities would grant holders of Smicha approximately 90 undergraduate credits.
Recently Nova Southeastern University, with whom the Merkos Chinuch Office has a working relationship, has been willing to consider those who earned a Smicha document at an AARTS accredited yeshiva, as having earned a BA equivalency in education.
This means AARTS accredited Smicha holders would be eligible to enroll in a MA program without needing to go through the hoops which have been required of others enrolling in an NSU Masters program through our partnership.
The Chinuch Office added: “This is not meant as official encouragement of the NSU Masters program for Kollel Yungeliet, only a recognition of the facts as they currently are.”

Shortcut?
Who said anything about a shortcuts? it’s about actually getting credit for the hundreds of hours spent learning so that they’re worth something in a practical way for those not going into the Rabbinate just like any other degree would be. (please not comments about smicha being worth the learning..that’t not the point here)
Obviously, just cause it gets you a BA it doesn’t mean that that BA works for anything.
there are many other possibilities besides shlichus or college, so why limit the discussion? There are courses available in hundreds of areas that are considered vocational training so they are always shorter than college and do not violate the Rebbe’s ban on college. For example, there are courses in many areas of computers (programming, networking, analysis, etc), autos (mechanics, body work, painting), construction (design, financing, environment), quasi-medical (blood testing, sonograms, dental assisstant, X-ray tech, pharmacy tech) and so on. why no shortcuts for girls? the want a ba in education they actually have to sit through all the stupid subjects in touro or whatever kosher college even with seminary credits. even if a girl is going on shlichus if she wants to open up a preschool shes gonna need a degree
I currently attend Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. I worked very hard in high school and I find that the main problem with alot of students is that they don’t take the secular world seriously. They think they could get by by just learning all day in the kollel

Is the semicha as choshuv as the degree or vice versa?

when you want to get a job in education, they ask if you have smicha. This will make a diffrence in the money. The smicha will bring you up to higher pay scale
whether your pay cheque is coming from a Lubavitcher mosad or not should not determine if you are a Shaliach. The Rebbe wants each one of us to do his Shlichus in bringing Moshiach in the best possible way that we are capable of notwithstanding where a pay cheque is coming from. MOSHIACH NOW!

You bring up an important point – that in a few years there won’t be anymore places to go on shlichus. That is not true. As shlichus grows hundreds and hundreds of positions open up – thriving Chabad centers need program directors, principals, teachers, Rebbies, administrators, fundraisers etc. And incresingly so as todays shluchim break ground and create opportunities for a new generation of shluchim – perhaps not the “founding shliach” but a vital organ in the Rebbes shlichus. For years, bochurim have been using Morristown and 770 degrees to go to law school, business school and graduate school for psychology and education. Is the chiddush here that any smicha is now accepted by this university? The problem that plagues Lubavitchers trying to enter graduate programs is not the recognition of their credentials, it is the inadequacy of their preparation for graduate programs. I ain’t no fan of “chinuch office” but if this is as it says it is, it would be a MAJOR accomplishment. Someone who did what he was supposed to do, by getting smicha, and currently wants or needs a propfession and source of income easier gotten by a real college degree can now skip the wasteful 4 first years and do waht needs to be done.
oh, yes. and an real alternative to the current optionless predicament many now have inor out of “the system”.

As far as preparing men for the future goes, there’s no doubt that our Yeshivas are not fulfilling their obligations. As earlier posters correctly state, there are too few opportunities for Shlichus & no alternatives. We are raising a generation of unskilled laborers…if we’re lucky.
This cracks me up! Nova will take anyone who can pay their exorbitant fees. Of course they will accept the Smicha, now they have a whole new pool of possible candidates to extort money from. Go to a decent university and stop getting ripped off!

There are virtually no places left to go on shlichus.
Most shluchim are now saving cities for their kids. Meaning that in a few years from now, most newlyweds will not be moving on shlichus. Which means, we will have tons of yungeleit without any tools to make a living.
In this day and age, it is NOT possible to make a living without qualifications. You will only get $10 per hour. some changes need to be done… and fast.

As an attending Touro student, I find this story’s ambivalent dance to be laughable. Looking at the bored, lifeless, and debt enhancing Kollel lifestyle of many of my friends, I wonder what it will take to change the current Chabad culture of Laissez-faire. I agree with you. The Yeshivahs have been setting up an entire generation without the tools needed to make a parnassa outside of shlichus/teaching.
Its about time the Yeshivos at least put in the effort to get Yeshivah yeasrs / smicha recognized as a Bacalor – at least then young newlyweds have a hope of getting a higher degree, have a hope in bringing in a decent income.
wake up people, Shlichus now a days is so corrupt (if you are not related to a Shliach you have 0% -25% chance of getting a Shlichus) so men need to have other options, it should be encouraged before they are married with kids and not shunned upon. Besides what is wrong with places like Machon L’parnasa and Touro.

Did the Rebbe say not get a degree or did he say the US collages campus (specificaly live in) is not a good place for a frum Yid.???
If getting a degree is ossur, you are condemning thousands of people who aren’t shayach to shlicus or teaching to perpetual poverty. Is that what the Rebbe wants?
If its possible to get a higher education without going to college (correspondence) would the Rebbe be against that?
