The milestone 80th birthday of Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Hertz was marked by the bochurim of the Yeshiva Gedola Lubavitch in London, England, which he heads.
A morning breakfast farbrengen was arranged by the talmidim who called it “a small token of their appreciation for his warmth, kindness and dedication to his students for nearly 40 years.”
“His Talmidim are like his children,” they told COLlive.com. “He puts his heart and soul into teaching, and he has many hundreds of grateful Talmidim all over the world.”
In addition to the role of Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Hertz is the Rov of the Lubavitch community in Golders Green and a member of Hisachdus Kehilos Hacharedim – Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations (UOHC) in London.
Joining the celebration at the Yeshiva this past Thursday were his sons Rabbi Avrohom Hertz, Maggid Shiur at Beis Medrash Oholei Torah in Crown Heights and Director of Chabad of Bensonhurst in Brooklyn, NY, and Rabbi Baruch Hertz, Rov of Congregation B’nei Ruven in Chicago and Executive Director of Lubavitch Girls High School of Chicago.
The bochurim presented the Rosh Yeshiva with a special gift, a beautiful leather bound Siddur, customized with his name and best wishes on the front cover.
The following Shabbos, Parshas Tazria-Metzora, a grand farbrengen was held at Beis Hamedrash of Kingsley Way, with the participation of current and former Talmidim, as well as many good wishers from within and from outside the community.
The Gabai of the Beis Hamedrash, Rabbi Eli Lazar, opened the proceedings by presenting Rabbi Hertz with a beautiful Megila case and a set of Shulchan Menachem, on behalf of all Anash of Northwest London.
The Rosh Yeshiva was in very good spirits and led the Farbrengen for many hours. His illustrious sons addressed the assembled, as did various Chavrei Hanhala of the Yeshiva and several respected community members.
“May the Rosh Yeshiva continue to go from strength to strength in good health together with his Rebbetzin, and may he continue to lead the Yeshiva and the community until we very speedily great Moshiach Tzidkeinu B’korov Mamash,” bochurim wished.

The Rosh Yeshiva was our principal, or headmaster as its called and he was beloved by the entire school. He loved every boy in the school and was so warm and caring to all. The entire school loved the Rosh Yeshiva. He gave us a cheshek and a geshmuk to learn. The Rosh Yeshiva instituted a learning baal peh contest where if we learnt a certain amount of dafim baal peh… Read more »
