A noted philanthropist from Los Angeles has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the suspect in a violent attack in Crown Heights on Shabbos, Matzav.com reported.
A 50-year-old Jewish man walking home from shul on Rutland Road near Schenectady Avenue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn when he was violently assaulted by a perpetrator who allegedly beat and strangled him after screaming anti-Semitic threats at him.
The victim – who has lived in the neighborhood for about 3 years – was taken to Kingsbrook Jewish Hospital, having suffered a cracked rib, as well as bruising and scratches across his body.
The assailant remains at large. He was described by the victim as tall and muscular, in his 40s, with a small beard.
This is the second week in a row that a hate crime occurred in Crown Heights. Last weekend, a 42-year-old Jewish man visiting Crown Heights was attacked on Eastern Parkway.
The Anti-Defamation League announced on Sunday that it is offering $5,000 rewards for information leading to the arrests and convictions of the individuals responsible for both attacks, JTA reported.
The philanthropist who is offering the $50,000 reward told Matzav.com that “such a crime, suspected to be motivated by bias, must not be ignored. It is important that our community make it known that perpetrators of such heinous attacks will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
NYS Senator Jesse Hamilton condemned the attacks, saying, “As a community, we must stand united in speaking out against these hateful, anti-Semitic crimes. These attacks are an assault on decency and an assault on our values; they are crimes that are especially cruel for violating the sanctity of a time for worship, peace, and reflection,” Senator Hamilton said.
“When an attacker aims to divide and isolate us from one another, then it is even more important to speak out together, to unite and say everyone in our community deserves safe streets, dignity, and respect. It is important to stand with and support the victims of these crimes, to let them know you are not alone.
“I urge any member of the public who can aid police as they investigate these crimes to come forward. Our streets should be safe for every member of our diverse community and I join in upholding our true values.”
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is planning to stand alongside representatives of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council on Monday at 4:30 pm to denounce the recent assaults.
Joining them will be advocacy organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), and local elected officials such as Council Members Alicka Ampry-Samuel and Laurie Cumbo.
