A meeting at Brooklyn Boro Hall introduced Brooklyn’s religious leaders to the new chiefs of NYPD Community Affairs and to explain the new way that the police are protecting the people of NYC.
Chief Nilda Hofmann, Commanding Officer of Community Affairs, and Assistant Chief Kim Royster were introduced by the highest-ranking uniformed officer of NYPD Chief of Department Terry Monahan and by Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison.
The chiefs presented the new dual strategies of Neighborhood Policing and Precision Policing, that are designed to bring police and community closer and promote better cooperation between the Police and the people they serve, while at the same time making real continued and sustained reductions in crime.
At the meeting, hosted by Brooklyn Boro President Eric Adams and organized by his aide Abe Friedman, there were representatives of the Flatbush, Williamsburg, Crown Heights and Boro Park communities, including Rabbi Eli Cohen of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, and Devorah Halberstam from the Jewish Children’s Museum.
Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs) are holding community meetings called “Build the Block” in each sector of the precinct. A new website has been set up to help residents determine which sector they live and when the meetings will be held.
The 71st and 77th precinct web pages now have names and contact info for the NCOs for each sector. By getting to know your NCO, the Chiefs explained, you will have someone to call when there’s an issue that needs to be addressed on your block and the officers will know what to expect when they respond to a 911 call.
The second prong of the new strategy is Precision Policing. Rather than being focused on numbers of arrests, the Department is now focused on building strong legal cases that take the small number of hardened criminals that commit most of the crime off the streets for long periods of time.
This strategy has already resulted in very significant arrests and convictions that have removed career criminals from the streets of Crown Heights. 77 Precinct, North of Eastern Parkway had the best crime reduction statistics in all of Brooklyn.
