Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman, the Rosh Yeshiva who was the towering figure of the frum Jewish community, passed away on Tuesday, 24 Kislev 5778.
He was 104.
Born and raised in Brest (Brisk), then part of the Russian Empire, Rav Shteinman studied by Rabbi Moshe Skolovsky, the Brisker Rav Rabbi Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, and Rabbi Aharon Kotler.
Upon reaching draft-age in 1937, he was subject to the Polish draft, He tried to evade the draft by starving himself, but he was declared fit to serve by the draft officer. He fled with other Brisk students to Switzerland.
With the outbreak of World War II, he became a war refugee and was incarcerated in the Schonenberg labor camp near Basel, where nearly all the inmates were Torah-observant. He was the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust.
While still in Switzerland, he married Tamar (Tema) Kornfeld who was sent there from Poland to cure her respiratory problems. The couple had four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Living in a small apartment on Chazon Ish Street 5 in Bnei Brak, Rav Shteinman was known for his extremely modest lifestyle. Until 2014, he slept on the same thin mattress that he had received from the Jewish Agency upon his arrival in Israel in the early 1950s.
In Israel, Rav Shteinman was appointed Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevezh L’Tzi’irim. He founded and led Yeshivas Gaon Yaakov and Yeshivas Torah B’Tifarta.
Following the passing of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv in 2012, Rav Shteinman was widely regarded as the gadol of the non-Hasidic Lithuanian Jewish world and the Degel HaTorah political party in Israel.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin called Rabbi Shteinman “A Torah giant and a teacher who gave thousands and tens of thousands of people direction in their lives. Despite his firm positions, he knew how to convey his ideas gently, in a pleasant manner, and with a great love of the Jewish people.”
“The rabbi was a tremendously dedicated learner, a Torah genius, kindhearted and generous, rich with the experiences of long life. He was a man whose wisdom was exceeded only by his humility,” Rivlin said.
In Chassidic circles, he will also be remembered for fostering peace and friendship between Chassidic and Litvish communities. He notably traveled abroad with the Rebbe of Ger to benefit Yeshivos and instructed Yated Neeman not to attack Chabad while the newspaper was under his guidance.
In recent years, Rav Shteinman met with Rabbi Yoel Kahn, the preeminent Chabad scholar and head reviewer of the Rebbe’s teachings. During their discussion, a copy of Chassidus Mevueres was given to him. “You ruined my night,” Rav Shteinman said, adding that he won’t sleep until he reviews the sefer.
After the terror attack on the Chabad center in Mumbai, India, in which 5 Jews were murdered, Rav Shteinman instructed to “add unity among the Jewish people.”
Rav Shteinman had been hospitalized multiple times in recent months amid growing concerns for his health. Hundreds of thousands of mourners attended levaya in Bnei Brak on Tuesday. There were no eulogies, as requested by Rav Shteinman in his will.
VIDEO: Rav Shteinman replies on rejecting boys from Yeshivas
Baruch Dayan Haemes.
What a great Rav, just reading his will/Tzavaa brought tears to my eyes, how humble and unassuming, a real Torah Jew, Yehi zichro baruch
Not only did the Rav not hate Chabad, he was very much against the Peleg faction, from the Litvish world, protesting and attacking soldiers & police. He wanted them to go to the draft office when they got their army notices, get their exemption papers & go back to learning. He was a man of peace, not anger & fighting. He will be missed.
Nati Grossman and the Yated Ne’eman community should do teshuva for the tzures they caused him. He was a principled leader. Baruch dayan ha’emes.
after the previous leader, Rav Shtieneman was a true friend of Chabad and help bring back peace between the Litvacks and Chabad.
BDE he will be remembered and missed.
Following is the Daas Torah of Maran HaGaon Rav Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman zt’l Regarding GROWING A BEARD Emulate Other Bochurim or Disregard Them? • Maran HaRav Shteinman was recently asked by a number of yeshiva bochurim: “The rest of the bochurim in my yeshiva do not grow their beards. Should I follow their example or not?” To each of them he replied that they should disregard their colleagues’ conduct. • To one bochur he quoted the Mishna in Ediyos (5:6): “Better to be called a shoteh your entire life than to be a rasha even once.” • To another… Read more »
Our schools should learn from him
He lived in Bnai Brak but did not hate Chabad
In the video the two individuals clearly lacked any respect. I found it shocking how they kept pushing their silly point. A little kabolos oil wouldn’t go amiss for them.
Without reading into it too much the name seems to be referring to a specific group, namely the litvish yeshiva community, and coins them as ‘torah jews.” I’m sure it was a simple mistake, but that totally undermines the very principles of torah and is flat out inaccurate. There is no one group that owns torah more than another.’ It belongs to all jews-morasha khilas Yaacov. Attributing one group to torah not only offends others, denies the truth, and cause friction, it is stealing a title and a inheritance! (I assumed it wasnt meant in the global Jewish community, because… Read more »

I never knew much about the rav but watching that video has enlightend me as to what a speciel person he was! A huge loss in klall yisroel, people with that kind of clear understanding and precision with such a tremendous humility are being taken over by the next genaration, the difference quite apparent in the video!! BDE
I hope he left many talmidim who follow in his great ways. Moshiach Now!!
The passing of Rav Shteinman is a loss for Klal Yisroel. He was firm in his convictions and not afraid to speak his mind. He lead his flock in a responsible and caring manner.
What an amazing Rosh Yeshiva no wonder he was so beloved.
thank you for writing such a beautiful article about Rav Steinman
What a huge loss this is! Must have משיח ASAP!!!
amazing video
BDE
R’ Shteinman was unafraid to criticize shtus, like those guys trying to get R’ Shteinman’s blessing to not accept two boys into the yeshiva because they were “the wrong type.” He was always able to criticize frumkeit shtusim and he was a great man for it (in addition to all of the other great things he did). His views on Nahal Chareidi were also practical and intelligent. This is a huge loss.
He was a true gadol. That video shows you what kind of honest and emesdiker person he was. The Torah world lost an amazing man today. I pray that his maaleh makom has the insight, the ahavas yisroel and true gadlus that R’ Shteinman Zatzal had.
ALL Jews mourn the passing of Rav Shteinman…..

A true Gadol and man of peace who loved both Chassidim and Litvishe Yidden. A sincere and honest man not a politician.
