COLlive.com and Nissan Mindel Publications present a new periodical column “Archive Gems” which will share guidance from the Rebbe and unknown details of Chabad’s history in the United States.
The material is from the archives of Rabbi Dr. Nissan Mindel, the trusted personal secretary of the Frierdiker Rebbe and the Rebbe, and a renowned Chabad author of literature for young and old for close to 60 years.
Rabbi Shalom Ber Schapiro, Director of Nissan Mindel Publications, was entrusted with these treasured archives by his father-in-law, Rabbi Mindel and it is to his lasting credit that the dissemination of chassidus is thereby being strengthened.
Much of this material will be published in the forthcoming book “Chabad in America Through the Folders of Nissan Mindel,” covering Chabad’s activities in America from 1940 until 1994, as preserved by Rabbi Mindel in his folders.
The first installment is presented in honor of the International Kinus Hashluchim convention taking place in Brooklyn, NY, and organized by Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch, the educational arm of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
It was on a rainy Thursday on 28 Adar 5704 (March 23, 1944), the fledgling organization of Merkos was being discussed – both its functions and financial support.
Present at this crucial meeting were the Frierdiker Rebbe, the Rebbe (known then as the Ramash), Rabbi Nissan Mindel, Alexander Cowen and New York lumber and shipping tycoon Julius Stulman. Rabbi Mindel, executive secretary, took notes in Hebrew and then translated them and typed them in English, as instructed by the Rebbe.

Where is the Stulman family today? Amazing to think that these people financed the greatest revolution in modern jewish history.
So, so interesting to see the beginnings of it all and how the Frierdiker Rebbe had such a plan. Loved the line about setting things up and then finding the funding. Look what has come from then!
