Chabad of the Five Towns in Long Island, under the directorship of Rabbi Zalman and Chanie Wolowik, celebrated the Chassidic date of Chai Elul with much fanfare.
A grand farbrengen held on Shabbos marked the births of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Chassidism, and of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad Chassidus and author of the Tanya.
On hand to address the crowd was Rabbi Shais Taub, a renowned author and lecturer who is one of the world’s foremost exponents of Tanya, the foundational Chassidic spiritual text, Tanya.
His appearance was the first of many this coming year at Chabad of the Five Towns, Rabbi Wolowik announced to community members gathered. As a thriving center for Jewish learning and activities, the Wolowiks found the need to expand their programming.
They engaged Rabbi Taub, an expert in Jewish mysticism and a weekly columnist for Ami magazine, as a scholar-in-residence for Chabad of the Five Towns for the year of 5778. Taub, his wife Brocha and 7 children have relocated from Pittsburgh to Cedarhurst.
On Monday night, Rabbi Taub gave a pre-Rosh Hashana lecture entitled “Repairing Your World,” the first in a series of monthly Monday night lectures to be held at Chabad over the coming year.
In addition to monthly lectures, Rabbi Taub will be giving a weekly Tanya shiur for women, “A journey through Tanya,” on Monday mornings beginning after Tishrei. It will be based on the “Map of Tanya” he composed for Kehot Publication Society and the Soul Maps course on Tanya for the Jewish Learning Institute.
“We will spare no effort to bring positive Jewish expression to the lives of young and old of varied backgrounds and affiliation,” says Shlucha Chanie Wolowik.
