When it comes to happiness and the pursuit thereof, it would appear that this is something for which women are more in tune.
Close to 200 men and women in Los Angeles attended the third lecture, in what has been dubbed the “Anash Lecture Series” at Shaarei Tefila’s Kanner Hall, on Wednesday night, July 19, 2017.
The free lecture series is an undertaking by some Los Angeles Anash members with cakes and coffee provided by Leider’s Catering. Interestingly, it had a ratio of 1.5 times the number of women to men this past event.
“This is something quite unique,” said Sruli Schochet, one of the event organizers. “Usually speaking engagements such as these have the opposite ratio. Clearly, women are more in sync with their emotional status and their developmental aims to build on it. It was definitely an eye opener for me and highlighted once again the importance of creating such events.”
This third lecture was headlined by Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, senior Rabbi of the Mill Hill Synagogue in London, England. Rabbi Schochet is also currently the longest serving Rabbi in the United Synagogue network and a renowned international lecturer.
The topic was: “The Pursuit of Happiness: How to maintain a happy disposition through the wear and tear of everyday life.” Rabbi Schochet kept the audience spellbound with his witty erudition and insightful anecdotes, littered with stories from the Talmud and Chassidus.
“The concept of viewing the glass as half full is a well-known one,” said Shloime Coleman, one of the event attendees. “But Rabbi Schochet brings out the message in such an impactful way, you could not help but leave there inspired.”

Rabbi Schochet will be back in California in a few weeks’ time, at the JLI Retreat in Palm Springs, where he has always proved to be a crowd favorite.
The next event Anash event in Los Angeles will be “CROSSFIRE! All the questions about Judaism you wanted answered but were too scared to ask” on September 7, 2017. Participating will be Rabbis Shusterman, Zajac and Bistritzky and moderated by Rabbi Abba Perelmuter. Questions can be sent in advance to [email protected]. All questions will be kept anonymous.
