Rabbi Reuvein Rapoport, one of the original 770 Yeshiva students who worked for the Tofutti Ice Cream company for many years, passed away on Friday, 26 Adar, 5777.
He was 87.
Born in 1930 in Kaminetz-Podolsk, a small town in Russia, Rabbi Rapoport emigrated with his family to the United States in the 1930s.
A few years later, while the family was living in Houston, Texas, the Frierdiker Rebbe paid for his ticket to travel to New York to enroll in the Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim in 770, where he was from the first students.
At one farbrengen, he merited that the Rebbe told him to be a “Soldat fun dem Aibishter,” to be a soldier in his service of G-d.
After his marriage to his wife Chavi Braverman he served as the Rabbi of the West 31st Street Synagogue in Brooklyn.
He also trained as an appliance mechanic, and was a familiar person to many in the Crown Heights neighborhood, as he visited many homes to fix their appliances.
He and his wife Chavi later settled in Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they had an open home to many guests.
He later became the Director of Production at the Tofutti company in New Jersey, working on flavor development for many years.
All his life, Rabbi Rapoport was known for his love for learning, whether it was Chitas, Gemorah, or any other subject, as that was his main “Koch” and enjoyment, his family member related.
A supporter of Chabad of Kensington, Brooklyn, he was known as a person that always had a kind word, a smile and a Dvar Torah to share.
He is survived by a large family that follow in his ways, including many that are Shluchim around the world.
He celebrated his 87th birthday this week surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his children Rabbi Yaakov Rapoport – Syracuse, NY, Rabbi Shmuel Dovid Rapoport – Atlantic County, NJ, Rabbi Yisroel Rapoport – Vineland, NJ, Boruch Rapoport – Crown Heights, Ella Adler – Kensington, NY, Chaya Sarah Richler – Montreal, Rina Lieberman – Kensington, NY.
He was predeceased by his wife Mrs. Chavi Rapoport.
