Leave it to motivated Lubavitch bochurim to find a reason to celebrate.
Students of Rabbi Avrohom Gerlitzky, beloved Magid Shiur at Bais Medrash Oholei Torah Zal in Crown Heights, needed to cancel their plans for his birthday celebration this year.
Bochurim would typically throw a full-on farbrengen to celebrate their teacher’s birthday in what has become an annual tradition for students.
The change of plans came after the passing of Rabbi Gerlitzky’s wife, Mrs. Soro Tema Gerlitzky (nee Levitin) at the age of 66 on 23 Cheshvan, 5777.
With Rabbi Gerlitzky reciting Kaddish and spending the year in mourning, bochurim searched for another occasion to show appreciation for his teachings and devoted care for them.
On Monday they came up with a cause for celebration and organized a modest farbrengen during which they gifted him a flight ticket to Israel and a water machine for this desk.
The sponsors of these gifts were the owners of Albany Bakery, Bunch O Bagels, Raskin’s Fish, Kol Tuv, Sell A Bration and Zakon’s.
What did they celebrate? Rabbi Gerlitzky delivering his 50th shiur this school year. The bochurim wished him many more years of ability and good health to continue teaching Torah.
We want him to speak in our community!
