In the latter years, the Rebbe would distribute dollars to thousands each week to give to Tzedaka – always with an added blessing.
Among the many who would stream past the Rebbe would be new parents or grandparents – often with their newborn in tow.
My first grandchild was, thank G-d, born late last week.
The morning after the birth, I flew to Miami for a speaking engagement. After Mincha and Maariv, I returned to the hotel and got myself into bed. A long overdue sleep beckoned. I looked at the clock and saw it was only 7:30 pm local time.
I instinctively decided it was too early – got dressed and took an Uber to the Target store in N. Miami to buy a few things.
When I went to pay I pulled out my credit card. Then, I decided that I had sufficient US currency and so paid in cash. I got my change and made my way home.
Having arrived near my destination, I took out the few bills change I was given to grab a bite and there it was… one of the dollar bills has written on it “from holy Rebbe hand.”
It was customary to keep the bill and substitute it with another for charity. It was also customary to write the date when received and sometimes one would add their own Hebrew name on the bill.
The date on this bill is 16th Shevat 5752 – which was in fact the Sunday before the new birth in our family. What is more, the individual’s name and mother’s name included Yakov and Rochel which are my parents’ names.
I’m warmed by the Divine Providence of this sequence of events and I know that the Rebbe’s blessing is always with all of us. May this new Grandchild grow to be a real source of nachas to her Parents and Grandparents and an inspiration to Klal Yisroel.
Meanwhile, I attach the picture of the dollar in the hope that its rightful owner can be identified and that it can be returned.
If it is Dov then that is also the name of the baby’s father!!!
Beautiful!
