A third kosher restaurant is opening up on the “other side” of Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, near Lubavitch Headquarters and a Subway station.
Calabria, located on the corner of Lincoln Place and Kingston Avenue, is a new urban-rustic pizza place boasting Roman-style pizza baked in rectangular pans and displayed in large glass cases.
It is named after the sun-baked region in southwest Italy of rugged mountains, old-fashioned villages and dramatic coastline. It is also the name of the esrogim Lubavitchers use for Sukkos.
That isn’t the only Chassidic influence on the store. Its eclectic decor is accentuated by the funky art of Leviticus on the walls and a full page of chapter 32 from the Alter Rebbe’s book of Tanya painted on the ceiling.
“The only item the restaurant will sell is pizza,” says Meryl Harel, the manager of the restaurant which is owned by the Harel brothers, who also own Chocolatte and the new Ess n Bentch eateries on Kingston Avenue.
“We will be selling pizza by the weight, which is not a new concept, it’s actually the way pizza was offered years ago,” she told COLlive.com. “Customers can choose the size of the slice, and they can choose from the many varied cheeses and toppings.”
Since the pizza is sold by weight, customers can try one or many of the different toppings in each meal. The only other item on the menu will be soda and beer, she says.
The owners say that Crown Heights locals and visitors will be coming for the great food and relaxed atmosphere, families during the day and at night it will be a great place to chill with friends and family.
Calabria will be opening in the next week or so. They will be open 11 am to 1 am, and Motzei Shabbos until 2 am. They will offer free delivery in the Crown Heights area.
The owners are seeking employees, email [email protected] for information.

Side windows r supposed 2 b umeemenue yotzer orr? Cool !
I heard that that the “other side” is called Crown Heights North. When people walk across Eastern Parkway they feel as if they are going “out” of CH to eat, and actually sit down for a meal. It keeps much more bussines local, rather then having to go to other neighborhoods. That’s why the new eateries there have been doing well. You also get a much wider variety of clientele. Such as people from other Jewish communities coming to CH, sitting that was unheard of just a few years back. Please keep clean, have friendly service, and have fair prices.… Read more »
I hope the pricing is family affordable !
really cool having perek lamed beis on the ceiling
tanya is swell
Why is Perek Lamed Beis on the ceiling and poster!?
Doesn’t the bagel shop sell pizza and coffee
how will they put it in shaimos?
You apparently are on the “other side” of Eastern Parkway. This place is just down the block.
Do we need a place that sells beer as a regular item all the time? Just asking. Seems like a family pizza place seeking beer is antithetical to a Jewish neighborhood.
Will it be Chalav Yisrael?
Connection to pizza?
LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS!!
Hope it’s under HaRav Osdoba
It will be rather funny when, come Tishrei time, “Calabria” is the only store on Kingston Avenue not selling Esrogim.
sounds so good, I’m so excited to come check it out
we have one pizza shop in CH which does not have a coffee machine!!!! crazy….i hope this one will have it. they only mentioned beer and soda.
Are they planning on having a hechsher?
