BROOKLYN, New York (WABC) — A Long Island Rail Road train crashed Wednesday morning at Atlantic Terminal, leaving dozens injured.
Fire officials say 103 people were hurt when the train plowed into track 6 at the terminal around 8:30 a.m.; all were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
A source told Eyewitness News that preliminary information is that the train was going too fast as it entered the station and struck the bumper at the end of the track.
The LIRR train failed to come to a complete stop on Track 6 at the Brooklyn station, one witness said.
Other witnesses reported hearing a loud boom.
According to the New York City Office of Emergency Management, the fire department reports that patients are being triaged with minor injuries. They are characterized as “walking wounded.”
An estimated 600 people were on the train when the crash occurred.
Passengers were being moved to the street level.
As the train approached the end of station, witnesses said, they slammed against something. Many began to panic, and started screaming and crying.
One described the aftermath as “total pandemonium,” with some people falling forward and others falling on top of each other, they said.
Tracks 5 and 6 are out of service for the investigation. The LIRR said there will be residual delays for trains en route to Atlantic Terminal.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is responding to the scene.
The Rebbe wrote to bochrim going on mivtzoyim that they shouldn’t go in the first cart on the train, now it’s reall understood why. (they are saying that most injures happened in the first cart)……
My husband currently rides the train daily through the Atlantic terminal. I’m concerned and I don’t believe it was mere accident! Unless the conductor & engineer both became unconscious minutes before the crash. I also take the train through this terminal but not currently on a daily basis. I know investigations take time. I’m concerned preventive measures be taken soon to circumvent something worse G-d forbid!
That’s what your concerned about!?
Curious- what are the names of any yidden for Tehillim?
There are many people as curious as you are, that’s what investigations are for, we may not know for a while…
What was the train conductor & engineer doing or not doing at the time of the crash??
