R’ Sholom Levertov, a soft spoken Chabad chossid who lived in Brooklyn after surviving the Communist regime, passed away Sunday night, 27 Cheshvan 5777.
He was 89.
Born in Moscow, Russia, he escaped oppression and fled to Samarkand (in today’s Uzbekistan) at the age of 15. He was from the first students at the makeshift Tomchei Tmimim Yeshiva there.
After making it to the shores of the United States, he settled in the Crown Heights neighborhood where he raised a large family and worked as a jeweler.
He would read the Torah in the small ‘zal’ shul of 770 Eastern Parkway for many years and also merited to serve as a Chazzan in the Rebbe’s minyan in the main shul on Shabbos Slichos and Mincha of Yom Kippur.
On Sunday night, R’ Sholom watched the entire gala banquet of the Kinus Hashluchim attended by his children and grandchildren. At the conclusion, he asked about the children’s Kinus Yaldei Hashluchim attended by his great-grandchildren. He passed away shortly afterwards.
He is survived by his wife Pesia Levertov, their children Rabbi Zalman Levertov – Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Bailah Vilenkin – Crown Heights; Mrs. Yehudis Lieberman – Ashkelon, Israel; R’ Berel Levertov, R’ Shaul Levertov, Mrs. Devora Leah Dechter, all of Crown Heights, and Rabbi Yossi Levertov – Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister Mrs. Sima Plotkin of Los Angeles, CA.
The Levaya will take place today, Monday, leaving Shomrei Hadas in Boro Park at 12 pm and passing by 770 at 1 pm.
The family will be sitting Shivah at 808 Montgomery St. No visiting between 1:00-3:00 PM and after 9:30 PM.
Davening times: Shachris 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 and 9:30 AM. Mincha 4:00 and 4:15 PM. Maariv 5:00 PM. 4 minyanim are needed.
Baruch Dayan Haemes.

Zaidyyyyy
Still can’t believe it!
Come back!
When I came to CH some 30 years ago, as a “beginner” in Yidishkeit, Rabbi Levertov was one of the very few who showed interest in me and made me feel welcome in the community.. I was a frequent guest in his Shabbos table. His human warmth will be missed
He was very caring, and always followed up with people’s lives.
Always made people feel comfortable, very aidel.
He did a lot of chesed in a quiet manor.

A very nice, quite, unassuming eidel man.
Zol zain a guter beter for all. May Hashem comfort the family.
Despite the tremendous physical challenges and difficulties reb Sholom endured, he still made every effort to attend the seder nigunim between mincha and maariv in 770 on Shabbosim. A true dugma chaya; he will be missed.
Special man. His father was of the Frierdiker Rebbe’s mesiras nefesh minyan. Only Simchos
