Mrs. Henna Gittel Einbinder, beloved matriarch of a dynastic family of devoted Chassidim and Shluchim around the world, passed away just moments after the Yom Tov of Simchas Torah.
She was 95.
Affectionately known to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as “Bubby Jean,” Mrs. Einbinder was a strong-willed and outspoken individual, known for her warmth of character, generosity of spirit, gregarious personality and astute sense of humor.
She never shied away from calling things exactly as they were, especially when she saw an injustice or untruth of any kind being disseminated.
As the daughter of legendary Chassidim of the Previous Rebbe – Horav Yehoshua Eliyahu and Hinda Wolosow of Riga, Latvia, z”l – Henna Gittel and her brother, Feivel Wolosowand sister Rochel Kronenberg, were exposed to the ideal of mesiras nefesh for Yiddishkeit early on in their lives. This spirit was in even greater evidence during the trying years the Previous Rebbe spent in Riga, during which time Horav Yehoshua Eliyahu served as the Previous Rebbe’s personal winemaker.
In the United States, Mrs. Einbinder and her late husband, R’ Eliyahu Tzvi Einbinder obm, were among the early pioneers of the Orthodox Jewish community of New Haven, Connecticut, and received many “horaos” (guidance-pointers) from both the Previous Rebbe and the Rebbe, in that regard.
The Einbinders were particularly instrumental to bridging gaps and bringing various factions of the New Haven Jewish community together in pursuit of the greater good of building institutions of Torah and mitzvos throughout the greater New Haven area.
Mrs. Einbinder was especially attentive the needs of the young yeshiva bochurim who would be dispatched to learn in New Haven. Henna Gittel Einbinder merited to see five generations forward continuing along the path forged by her righteous and saintly parents.
She is survived by her children: Faygie Lipsker – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Libbi Weiss – Kfar Chabad, Israel; Dvora Einbinder – Jerusalem, Israel; Rabbi Mordechai Einbinder – Tarzana, California.
