With just days left to this Hakhel year, a group of Crown Heights residents and leaders have decided to create a community event to send it off with a spectacular bang!
“A couple of us were sitting around two weeks ago talking about the past year and it occurred to us that Hakhel is almost over,” said Director Chony Milecki. “We began to wonder: Is there anything we could still do?”
Someone joked, “Hey, let’s do the Hakhel Mega-Event again.”
Technical Producer Mendy Boaron did not think it was a joke, and immediately began laying the ground-work to make it happen.
“We are doing it again, bigger, better and more spectacular than last time,” says Executive Producer Shimmy Weinbaum. “We all know how important Hakhel is to the Rebbe and the emphasis to ‘Chap Arein’ in the last days of Hakhel, gathering the men, women and children.”
“This will also be a Hakhel of musicians,” says Chony. “The musicians of Crown Heights are joining forces to make one spectacular event, and some of them even gave up jobs to be here for the community.”
Benny Friedman will be the featured performer. Yossi Cohen will lead “The Kapelle” adult choir. Fitche Benshimon will debut a brand new children’s choir. Chony Milecki is leading a phenomenal 15 piece orchestra including a brass and string section. And it will all be conducted by Avremi G.
Coming just before Rosh Hashana, this Mega-Hakhel will not just be a Hakhel concert and celebration, but primarily a community Farbrengen to get us into the mood and spirit of Tishrei. Sichos will be played on massive LED video walls lining Eastern Pkwy, and the sounds of Chassidishe Nigunim will project the breadth of Eastern Pkwy from 6 line array stacks.
The police will be shutting down the parkway for the event. Last Hakhel Event, the police estimate was over 15,000 people in attendance and the organizers are expecting even larger crowds this time. Maps will be posted to ensure clear direction as to the seating areas.
Chony adds, “The program is designed to inspire all in attendance to grow our relationships with Hashem and take Hakhel forward into the next six years. We really hope that people who have not yet had the chance to make a Hakhel gathering this year, will jump at this opportunity to create their own Mini Hakhel event at our Mega Hakhel Event, by inviting their friends and family to come.”
The event will take place this Thursday, 26th Elul, 29th of September from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
