Today, Chai Elul, 7th grade students of Klurman Mesivta in Miami Beach had the opportunity to celebrate a Bar Mitzvah during their Gym class.
The Bochurim met Gabriel playing soccer and after a couple of days of befriending him, he decided he was ready to put on tefilin.
Quick thinking Bochurim ran back to get a pair of Tefilin and with the assistance of their coach helped Gabriel put them on for the first time.
It was a visibly emotional and impactful moment for him. Gabriel later explained that although he knew he was Jewish he was never exposed to it.
While he always felt he would one day become Bar Mitzvah, he thought it would be “with some older Rabbis with beards in NY.”
The reason why he was so emotional was because the “combination of him being a soccer player and having the opportunity to put on tefilin on the soccer field amongst these beautiful children” was more perfect than he could ever have envisioned, Gabriel said. Gabriel expressed a sincere interest in continuing to grow and learn, with the students’ help of course.
Before their next class was ready to begin, there already was an idea in place to pool together Maaser money from their Bar Mitzvahs to purchase a pair of Tefilin for the new Bar Mitzvah “boy”.
