CGI in Rostov has built a name for itself as one of the most exciting and thrilling Gan Israel overnight camps in the FSU.
With so many campers and previous staff members signing up for a spot in this amazing camp, arrangements had to be made to buy new beds just days before camp started, in order to accommodate 165 campers for both sessions.
This year a special Teen Division opened up for the first time for campers over 12 years old. These kids were treated to an experience of a lifetime with fun American- style activities, unique workshops, and fascinating Jewish classes.
Dozens of campers who came from cities in war-torn Ukraine finally had a chance to be away from the stress of their difficult lives.
“Camp gave so much to our campers. Being surrounded by love, warmth, and yiddishkeit for 24 hours a day, really brought out the best in every child,” said Kaila Danzinger.
Rabbi Chaim Danzinger recounts: “Just before the summer I received a call from a Jewish mother who wanted to send her daughter Violetta, to camp, but she asked if it’s alright since her daughter was baptized and wears a cross. She explained that the girl’s father isn’t Jewish, and he insists that she wear the cross all the time. At first, I was inclined to turn her down, but after contemplating for a minute, I realized that this girl probably needs camp more than anyone else. Giving someone like her a Jewish education and identity is the reason we run our camp.
“Initially Violetta refused to join her bunk for morning prayers. A few days into camp however, on her own accord, she decided to wear the necklace under her shirt and quietly joined the classes and prayers. By the end of camp, she confided in her counselor that even though her father gets upset when she shows interest in her Jewish background, she plans on saying the Shema prayer each night before going to sleep after the lights are turned off.”
