Festival Unites Crown Heights

In contrast to past times, hundreds of Jewish and black residents of Crown Heights came together at Brower Park in Crown Heights for a day of fun and unity. Photos

‘Leaving CH in droves’ is only cuz of the highway robbery housing…plz don’t blame everything u dislike on that 😉

There is no excuse for partying on your brothers murder. Get real, it def is ‘us’ and ‘them’ who are you trying to kid? You may only succeed in fooling yourself, hopefully it wont need to take someone close to you getting hurt or mugged to realize that…

Gentrification = Solution
August 22, 2016 3:52 pm

Crown Heights today is not defined by racial. Today it is seen as the ground zero of gentrification, which is bringing into the area a steady influx of upwardly mobile whites from all over the world. Real estate developers and apartment building owners see these newcomers as growing bank accounts. And the rich get richer as the poor and the unemployed (mostly blacks) are forced to leave long-time dwellings for cheaper residences, often outside the city.

Your whole problem is was the music and basically they must accommodate our sensibilities only because we exist. That’s what your response sounds like, but i expect no better from those who isolate themselves.

Event
August 22, 2016 1:32 pm

To # 34, Who knew? Was there any effort made to get the word out about Friday morning’s ‘event’?

August 22, 2016 1:07 pm

Regarding your last point. Very funny. Because there is no housing, thats is why people are leaving.

Regarding this event, forget for a second if it was the right things to do for te riots….how can a lubavitcher arrange/go to an event with non jewish music? And then u say this is what the rebbe wants? Lets party together more often, no? Maybe our ohelie torah boys and the goyim boys should hang out and play together? After all we do not want to show we are racists….pathatic

there was a "kosher" event on friday
August 22, 2016 12:30 pm

On Friday there was an event where a kapitel tehilim was said, a family member spoke and a kail moleh rachamim was said. There was no goyishe music, no treife food, why were there even less people there?

I don't hate the event
August 22, 2016 10:57 am

I walked there heard the non Jewish music and left. I told my kids it wasn’t a kosher environment and we went to the JCM instead. I have no problem going to a unity event for ALL of Crown Heights. The only problem was the non Jewish music and what I thought, and I may have been mistaken, the non Kosher smells floating my way. I think the idea was great but, yes indeed like one commenter stated, it was in fact Achashverosh’s party. I would really have liked to see kosher kids music playing and I probably would have… Read more »

seven laws
August 22, 2016 9:56 am

so just exactly why are not the crown Heights community (us) trying to promote the 7 laws of noah, in a more noticeable way? I assume it is not seen as a big enough priority. but seemingly an event like this could have been an opportunity to educate the goyim on this jewish concept.

71st community family fair
August 22, 2016 9:42 am

every year the 71st precinct holds a family fun fair for everyone in the neighborhood with kosher and non kosher food and rides, and everyone happily attends. for those who are bashing the fact that the event was mixed for jews and non jews. suddenly now its an issue? please.
this is just people looking to make trouble.

“exactly what the rebbe wanted” to party with goyim. yes peace is crucial but not fun, festival and eating together. please.

yada
August 22, 2016 8:24 am

ok, so while some of these comments are correct to some extent – in the end it was an effort at least to bridge some gap – whatever the gap is – yes, I am very much in agreement with some of the derogatory views here too.

However, the Rebbe would probably have agreed to this to some extent for sure.

That said, those leaving CH – please do so quickly – we can all use the extra housing that you’ll leave behind.

Commemoration
August 22, 2016 7:31 am

To #19, some of the community that might have attended were out-of-town for the weekend and others had prior commitments for the day.

August 22, 2016 1:31 am

I am glad very few attended – not because I am racist, a loser or anything like that. Simply because a “festival” with balloons, rides etc is NOT the way to commemorate a pogrom. Furthermore, NOBODY approached the Rosenbaum family to get their input, which is very disrespectful. The whole thing is tacky, insensitive & makes a joke of a nightmare. I was at the trial of Lemrick Nelson. I was very active in trying to get justice for a murdered Jew. What did YOU do? Sing kumbaya with murderers? And how do you feel today about the increasing anti-semitic… Read more »

a concert is not unity. you dont sit and eat together. you dont intermingle as is the purpose of this festivele and fun day

What a Kiddush Hashem!
August 22, 2016 12:07 am

B”H
This is exactly what the Rebbe wanted! So proud of all who organized this event to promote peace and unity among all the residents of Crown Heights. Keep up the good work!

To all people hating on this event
August 22, 2016 12:04 am

Comments like yours are why people are leaving crown heights in droves. Stop with your hateful, anti-Torah racism and start making a kiddush HaShem by embracing people of all races and faiths. Besides, if you even called yourselves Chassidim of the Rebbe, you would’ve used this opportunity to go spread Sheva mitzvos bnei noach instead of making fun of those that do try to make a positive difference. In short: GET A LIFE!

The whole lubavitch community should have attended.
The negative comments make me want to throw up; they are probably racist,.lonely losers.
Thank Hashesm I left the Chassidishe Haters in C.H.

How racist of you!
What is the meaning of “they” and “us” ?!?
Why not refer to “them” as “we”. It is totally unjust to use such divisive language!

KRISTALNACHT CELEBRATION NEXT ?
August 21, 2016 10:51 pm

Since our exalted leaders, and activists in thier infinite wisdom chose to help plan, execute, and brazenly participate in this folly of all folly’s, perhaps they might wish to join forces with the KKK or other proNazi movements, and plan a “celebration” of the infamous Kristalnacht. It seems that they have no bounds as long as they can promote themselves in the public. Have they no shame or scruples?. This was a mockery to the memory of Yankel Rosenbaum A”H, and a mockerey of the terrible times that the Jews lived thru during the riots. The dismal turnout at this event was a… Read more »

Dont get what the point of this event was
August 21, 2016 9:45 pm

I also find it disrespectful when the death of a child albeit very tragic was an ACCIDENT! !!! is equated with the MURDER of an innocent person only because he was jewish! This point seems to be forgotten during theae events (even by the Jewish organizers) as it is not politically correct. Disrespectful to Yankel Rosenbaum hy”d, disrespectful to the rosenbaum family and disrespectful to the entire Jewish Community!

Unity
August 21, 2016 9:41 pm

Hope this resolved all the mugging and attacks we have in our community!

Do we really not learn from history and keep making the same mistakes?
Embarrassing how naive we can be…

just what i was going to say. same few white people, who are related or work for these politicians. since when do we have parties like achashveros together with others?

May the peace continue
August 21, 2016 7:00 pm

I am so impressed with those who attended and maintained dignity and respect for each other. Please, nay sayers, never again say that “they” are all *****. And may they never say we are all *****. Baruch Hashem.

Same Jewish faces seen over and over
August 21, 2016 6:29 pm

And these Jews, many of them, are or work for (or are related to) politicians, so they have a vested interest in the planners of the event.

And it looks like the hipster/yuppie population of Crown Heights were there, doing their “We Are the World” thing, as well.

Well, it’s always nice to get some free balloons, food, and face paint, etc. on a Sunday afternoon during the August doldrums.
