Greece’s largest island, known for its varied terrain of fine-sand beaches to the White Mountains, will soon be home to a permanent Chabad Jewish outreach center.
Arriving soon in Crete, located some 200 miles from Athens, will be Rabbi Yaakov and Libby Nechimovsky and their 6 children as the new Chabad Shluchim to the island which is the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea.
They will have no grace period as the current summer season is especially busy with some tens of thousands of tourists visiting Crete’s luxurious resorts and natural scenery and historic attractions.
In past years, Greece’s Head Shliach Rabbi Mendel Hendel has dispatched Lubavitcher bochurim to service the estimated half a million Israelis and Jews visiting the island during the summer.
With the Nechimovskys, both the visitors and the local Jewish families will be served year-round with spirituality, Torah classes, kosher food and regular Jewish programming.
Crete has a small Jewish community in the town of Hania and the Etz Hayyim synagogue which has stood since the Middle Ages, withstanding its near destruction by German forces during World War II.
