Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Bikur Cholim of Crown Heights (RCMBC) celebrated its annual gathering of volunteers and supporters with a ladies breakfast this past Sunday. Commemorating Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka’s 115th birthday, the event’s theme was “Celebrating Our Community”.
RCMBC Board Member Ruth Kirschenbaum spoke about how Bikur Cholim is a community organization through and through- the volunteers, patients, board members and even the name are all made up of elements of the community.
When someone is faced with a medical crisis, they should never feel alone! Bikur Cholim, which is an extension of the community, goes out of its way to to help alleviate the burden of critical illness. She relayed immense gratitude on the organization’s behalf to all the volunteers and supporters who continue enabling and supporting Bikur Cholim’s vital work.
Mrs. Elise Goldberg recounted the shock and fear that her family experienced after learning of her granddaughter’s serious diagnosis, followed by the relief of having the full weight of Bikur Cholim’s resources and the community’s support behind them during this most difficult time.
There were tears and hugs following Shaina Barber-Duchman‘s emotional account of her late mother’s last months. Her detailed account of Bikur Cholim’s kindness, with specific and touching examples, highlighted how the organization goes out of its way to give each patient exactly what they need to in their specific situation.
The speakers all expressed a common awe and appreciation for the enormous kindness and sensitivity of Bikur Cholim, its volunteers, and the community as a whole.
The event was permeated with a feeling of profound caring for one another and a sense that together we all look out for each other’s wellbeing and make this a beautiful community.
The magnificent event was entirely produced through donations of talent and time- from the stunning decor by volunteer Chani Greenbaum, to the delicious food all prepared or donated by local vendors including, Albany Bake Bhop, Brooklyn Artisan Bakehouse, Gombo’s, Natural a& Kosher Cheese, Rivkis Petit Treats, Truffles & Trends, Raskins Fish,Gourmet Glatt FT, Kee Kups, Cravings and volunteers- it all came together in an uplifting and inspiring gathering for a good cause.
As mentioned at the event’s closing, the group of women present epitomized “HaMaaseh Hu Haikar.” With a short and sweet program and only humble word spoken, it was Bikur Cholim’s actions that shined brightest.

Some comments overheard on social media following the breakfast sum up guests’ feelings:
“Kudos to Bikur Cholim of Crown Heights for their gorgeous annual brunch. I find it extraordinary that everything, from the food to the setup to the program, is put together by private people, for over two hundred guests, and that it looks and tastes more beautiful than if it had been professionally catered. This is what happens when things come straight from the heart!”
“We are so proud of the hard work they do to help families in the community who are suffering from illness. Thank you for being an inspiration to us every day.”
“The positivity in the room was palpable! I’ve never been prouder to be part of this community.”
