Rabbi Chaim and Rikvah Brikman, Chabad Shluchim of the Sea Gate gated community in Brooklyn, were on their way to a simcha when they heard the news about their son being stabbed.
Laiby Brikman, who celebrated his own wedding this past month in New York, was stabbed in the back by a black male on Wednesday morning in an unprovoked attack.
The parents rushed to their son’s side in the Kings County Hospital as the New York Police Department launched an investigation to catch the assailant who remains at large.
“We are now in the hospital with him,” Mrs. Brikman wrote on Facebook in a message to her friends and community members, updating them on the condition of her 26-year-old son.
“He is in a lot of pain from the wound and a collapsed lung, but he will be ok,” she wrote, adding: “Please say a prayer for him and do a mitzvah in his honor – that will help him recover.”
Laiby Brikman, who grew up assisting his parents with their activities at Chabad of Sea-Gate, moved to Crown Heights with his wife Mushka (nee Moskowitz) following their wedding on Shvat 17, 5776 (Jan 27, 2016).
Assemblymember Diana Richardson, who represents Crown Heights, said she will be working with NYPD’s Chief Steven Powers and Inspector George Fitzgibbons “to get to the bottom of this unfortunate occurrence, and to come up with viable solutions so that an event like this does not occur again.”
New York City Public Advocate Letitia James pointed out that “while it is not yet been determined if this is a hate crime, this is the second random stabbing of a member of the Jewish community in Crown Heights in just a few months.”
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, however, put the attack in the context of “a series of recent stabbings in Brooklyn,” mentioning both the indiscriminate assault in Crown Heights and “the fatal attack of a 26-year-old man in Brownsville.”
“These incidences have been the latest in a series of random slashings and stabbings across New York City,” Adams said, calling on residents “to be vigilant in the face of this serious public safety risk and express support for all impacted communities.”
