Engaged Couple Arrested in Kiev

Update, 3/28/2016:

While Pinchas and Chani are still facing charges in the Ukraine, and are still confined to the city of Kiev, where they presently remain, away from their family and children, the youngest of which is 2 years old, there has been a break in this case.

Israeli Police have announced the day before Purim, that after months of investigation both in Israel and in the Ukraine, several arrests have been made, (with more arrests expected to come) in connection with this case.

These individuals who have been arrested are allegedly responsible for harassing, beating, and planting marijuana in the suitcases of Pinchas and Chani, Israeli Police said.

While this is certainly good news, with truth finally coming to light, and ensuring that these people cannot continue to cause harm, the plight of Pinchas and Chani remains that they still have to fight for their freedom, and need what ever help the can get, and whatever support you can give, is most appreciated, to redeem them from their captivity.

Chani and Pinchas, frum Jews from Israel, are engaged to get married, looking forward to a lifetime of happiness together after Chani’s bitter divorce.

They traveled to the Ukraine to explore a possible job opportunity after they get married. On their way back to the airport they stopped in Uman to pray at the gravesite of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav.

Unbeknownst to them, someone placed two pounds of marijuana in their suitcase, according to their family members.

They said a person, who they suspect is connected to inserting the drugs, had tipped off Ukrainian authorities who were waiting at the Boryspil International Airport near Kiev to arrest the man and woman at the airport.

“They were clearly framed and are in dire need of help and support for them and with their defense so that she can return to her children, the youngest of whom is 2 years old,” a family member said.

Attorney Mordechai Tzivin is represented the couple, and funds are needed for the legal defense.

The trial has been set for February 25.

“Time is truly of the essence,” said the woman’s family member. “We are grateful to all who contributed towards the $12,000 we have raised thus far. We still need to reach our $100,000 goal to properly defend them and be prepared for their trial.”

The family is well known to Rabbi Yitschak Belinow of Milan, Italy and Rabbi Sholom Ber Korf of Delray Beach, FL.
