Dear fathers,
If you go out to the dancing tonight at the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva in Crown Heights with your children, please enjoy, dance, make freilich and you should have a lifetime of everlasting chassidishe nachas from them.
If you are participating on your own, please make it a point to dance with visitors and youngsters who would feel most welcome by someone taking the time to engage with them.
There are many searching souls hanging around, predominantly at the Crown Street corner. You might be one of those who think, “How annoying that they come, what do they want here?”
But we have not been taught better — by the Rebbe.
We must reachout to them with love. Think about the wondrous fact that they came here rather going to any ‘hip’ hangout or destination. Think about the fact that they are attracted to the light and the truth. So don’t ignore them.
Yungeleit need to come to Crown corner Kingston, drape an arm over some fellow’s shoulder, and just proactively and joyously sweep one of these fellows into a two-man chassidishe rikkud before he knows what is happening — l’chatchila ariber!
Maybe he’ll only dance a little, maybe a little more — hopefully the dance will expand into more. Hopefully, too, it will be like the ‘kasha’ food of Tomchei Tmimim that goes a long way.
This is the true Hakhel unity that the Rebbe was encouraging us to do this year.
If the celebration would be held during the day time, we would be having stands to help people put on Tefillin. Because this is held at night, we can’t do that but the obligation to care for another Yid is still there.
You don’t need to walk or drive to far places — opportunity is right here in our own laps. It’s almost too unbelievably simple to do hafotza, simcha and hakhel with all types of yidden, just like the real Hakhel.
As a past faculty member of our schools, I know that we have been trying to address the issue for years. I admit, it was not weighing heavily on me today, but this afternoon a respected member of our community stopped me in the street and said urgently, “Maybe you could help. There is a matter that needs to be addressed.”
I promised the person I would contact people I know. At one point, I had a light bulb moment — through the medium of COLlive we can reach many more people.
Please note: It may not be advisable for bochurim to come over and get involved initially. At any rate they should use discretion, but once the guys are shlepped into a dance, the yungeleit can surely use energetic reinforcement.
Much wishes for a successful Hakhel.

Please say that again! Yes, we can make a difference by simply and casually suggesting and encouraging friends, acquaintances and just anyone to stand and watch with us (girls) and dance (boys). You can make a difference.
Yemin Mikareves, Usmoel Doche. Sincerely, a Beis Rivkah girl who almost got caught up in this stuff, until someone asked me to hold their place on a crate, no, 3 crates high, and I witnessed the simcha (I wasn’t even the one dancing!) and I was HOOKED. 1 Year Later: My sister and I dress quite fashionably, yet 100% Tznious, No tight pencil skirts etc. and on the way to Simchas Beis, a group of 18-19 year old boys from flatbush passed by. The seemingly popular one stopped in front of us and said “Hey, Whats up?” in a teasing… Read more »
Unfortunately, it’s pretty bad. It’s where the barrier between the men and women’s section ends, so there’s a lot of inappropriate intermingling, the beer and cigarettes come out, it’s just a mess. The Hanhala in most schools send out letters to the parents telling them to avoid Crown and Kingston
We love you and every single person in Crown Heights, but we sometimes get overwhelmed with our own reponsibilities… so pleaseforgive us. that’s why this article is a small beginning to remind us that one step at a time Crown Heights community will become the envy of the world! I invite you to the revolution!
Its not necessarily at the corner of crown its all over that I see polisher chassisdim and as soon as I get them into the circle I see the smiles… You could never know what connection thease people have to chabad!
I was shocked to see scores of young teens drinking alcohol and smoking pot on Crown Street with not an adult in sight. Forget the dancing, adults and police shoukd patrol the darkened street and break up these illegal and immoral and dangerous activities. A young boy I passed was coughing violently while the other more experienced young teens propped his head up. Finally, after midnight police were searching one group for drugs. I literally covered my son’s eyesi order to walk home. Residents, peek outside. If young kids are doing alcohol and drugs on your driveway call the police.… Read more »
This is such a nice article. We “care” when someone is standing by the side and not dancing. When we see a person eating out of the Suka we “remind” them to eat in a Suka. Get real this is to Make you feel good you told him to eat in a Suka. There is a much deeper and larger problem NOT being delt with in our town. I don’t use the word community because we don’t have one. You can google the definition to find out what community means. This is about time we give pure true help to… Read more »
As someone who lives in a different city, BH we have many shuls and Chabads who have Sukkot parties and Simchas Beis Hashoevas. At every one, there is a group of people who stand on the sidelines that we can pull into dancing. The same can be said for Simchas Torah next week! For that matter, any simcha, any day at shul when you see a girl or guy who seems unsure, help them! Mivtzoim is good but when they come to you, you should also make sure that you see them and not just your own simcha or davening… Read more »
Bad. VERY bad.

thank you for something we really needed to remember….
Just wanted to clarify – why is it not advisable for bochrim to approach and “get involved initially”?
Thanks to the sincere Chossid for this vital message, – putting into action the Rebbe’s lifelong fervent appeal to “OPEN OUR EYES”, and reminding everyone what it’s really all about….
Yishar Kochachem –
May we dance to greet Moshiach and celebrate the true and complete Geulah NOW!

Thnx for actually trying to fix the situation and not just preach abt it the whole ppont of simchas beis is being ignored unless ppl do exactly what u recomend in this aeticle
Yeah im one of those crown st kids i guess…. why dont u invite me to dance? I might refuse at first but come on.
You can’t just make fun of crown corner like that?how bad could it have been
We run to do mivtzoim in Manhattan, Sheepshead Bay etc but we forget about our own. In our shul on ST, we get a lot of young guys wandering in in the hope of finding liquor. Instead, the men pull them in to dance, the women clap, and everyone has a great time. Just to add to #6 – it is very hard for young people to say Kaddish or yizkor. If an older, experienced and kind man (or woman in the case of yizkor) would stand by them and just be a source of support, that really helps. I… Read more »
Instead of more speeches and articles about Hakhel
Taking the action suggested in this letter would be much more effective and meaningful
So true.Every child should be included in the simcha. Thanks for the reminder.
ty for putting this out
if you know any children without a father, or without a present father, please consider inviting them along. You can’t imagine how much it will mean.
Signed,
A child who watched all the other children going on their father’s shoulder on simchas torah, and going under their father’s tallis for birkas kohanim, and never knew what it was like to do either.
During simchas beis is actually…traumatic. as a poor 16 year old girl i have disgusting memories of that place.
Was aways thinking about this. Thank you for posting!
P.s. we dont wear tefillin on chol hamoed
True ty
Yasher koach!
