The newly renovated headquarters of the IDT telecommunications company in Newark, New Jersey, includes a fully furnished synagogue stocked with prayer books and an extensive scholarly library.
A first for the corporation, IDT sources say this development is part of a new program aiming to serve motivated, high aptitude students who are looking to enter the workforce, but don’t have the necessary skills.
The CyberTEAM Academy (CTA), as the program will be called, is hoping to attract frum Jewish men interested in becoming IT Security professionals along with dedicating part of the day to learning Torah, as commonly practiced in the Orthodox Jewish community.
It was the brainchild of Golan Ben-Oni, a Lubavitch chassidic man from Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood who serves as the Chief Information and Security Officer at IDT Corp.
“There is an urgent need for IT security professionals,” Ben-Oni told COLlive.com about the program that is said to be particularly interested in training young married men who are focused on providing for their families.
New tech will be taught by IDT professionals, while the Kollel program will be headed by Rabbi Mordechai Lipskier, a young and respected Torah teacher and Director of The Beis Medrash of Crown Heights.
“Our unique kolel for kevius ittim (setting times to learn Torah) aims to provide a healthy transition from the yeshiva setting to the workplace environment, by empowering our students with a passion for Torah as a guide to daily life,” Lipskier said.
Plans are to have ‘development’ instruction, enabling students who didn’t complete high school math or English to complete university-level courses. Through a rigorous program of studies, graduates will be able to earn an Associates Degree in two years and a Bachelors Degree in four years.
“This is a high need, high growth field and we will be positioning our students to enter and thrive in the industry,” added Yona Handler, chief operating officer (COO) of the CyberTEAM Academy.
The training will be combined with internship, a focus on IT Security, coaching for industry certification and assistance with job placement and career development, all for a competitive annual tuition fee.
“We are starting with the end in mind,” Handler told COLlive.com. “We will enable students to progress from their current situation into a great career trajectory.”

I hope they actually pull it off, imagine how this can positively change the frum community!
not to take away any credit due to those who set this up but the ceo of idt has a history of supporting the frum world
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Jonas
either ami or mispocho (dont remember which) had an article about him and his aid to the frum world
you have a good point. Stam, who said they’ll be working for IDT? it seems like they’re just training them, no?
If they want to get in to the program they will have to push a little and get their GED, and it isn’t very difficult. If they can’t apply themselves enough to get a GED then they don’t deserve to get in and they don’t want them working for them. This is a great opportunity.
that’s some machine, enough to make me want to join 🙂
Is a brilliant scholar, and humble too. Best of luck to all of those involved in this endeavor!
glad to see you! you’re the right guy for this, professional and so pleasant!
I was lucky to learn semicha by him in Flatbush and all I can say is that anyone who learns by him will be happy they did, he’s life changing
Their application says that you need to have a GED, I think will turn away a lot of our guys….
This is so very needed. Fortunately Golan and Lipskier are addressing the key issue of employment in the frum world.
Mazal Tov Golan on making your dream a reality.
Or is it that you pay a nominal fee, to earn a degree that will ultimately pay big bucks?
I guess that’s what it is….
Kol Hakavod Golan AND to his wife Yocheved Leah!
חכמת אישה בנתה ביתה
You guys are both amazing and may you go from strength to strength!
We are so proud of you! You are being proactive in addressing one of the most pressing issues in our community. Kol hakavod. My only concern is there not being enough spaces to meet demand. Hopefully other frum companies will follow this model and pave the way for success for our young men.
That beis medrash is gorgeous, someone there has great taste
Golan is a man with big ideas AND HE MAKES THEM HAPPEN!
They say his boss, Howard Jonas, is a tzadik
This is the most amazing thing I’ve heard in a long time.
Kol hakavod to the organizers and to rabbi Lipskier, trailblazing enhancing programs for the Jewish people.
This is absolutely wonderful.
