Chaya couldn’t wait for her Bas Mitzvah. She was the youngest in her class and went to almost all the Bas Mitzvahs already. This was going to be the ultimate Seudas Hodaah.
“Hashem just make that miracle! Let that new treatment kick in! We will make sure that the miracle is publicized and the Kiddush Hashem is grand! We will remember it forever!”
I had so many conversations with Hashem-in the car, on my walks, tried everything …
Chaya and I spoke just three days before she passed away about her Bas Mitzvah. I was sitting with her on the couch- her last time there-trying to make life as normal as possible -before she needed to go back and lay down for good …
I told her, “Chaya I know you’re not feeling well now or up to sitting around and talking. We can continue the talk later when you are up to it, but let me just make sure I have all the details straight.”
We discussed the colors she loved on her friends’ invite. Black, white, gold, and fuchsia. I kept saying, so tell me what else, ( I knew this would be the last proper conversation we would have).
Chaya shyly smiling, “you said it won’t be like all the other ones. You will make mine different. Thanking Hashem. Like a wedding.”
Me: “What’s the question Chaya! For sure! We can’t wait! (watching her face to see if she suspected anything. Nothing. Trusting me.)
Chaya : “Do you think I will feel better for my Bas Mitzvah?”
First time she showed some worry.
Me: “Chaya of course you will feel better! You will see! Not even a question! Don’t worry, iyh!”
(there was no way she could even suspect)
She couldn’t wait for her special Bas Mitzvah trip to Israel. She had some unbelievable people – in LA, and in NY, at a moment’s notice, ready to fly her there.
She smiled and relaxed and was ready to move on to her bed, she had this conversation more for me then for herself. She just wanted us to sit next to her on her bed. I held her hand…..
“Chaya, I know that on 3 Elul – the actual date of your Bas Mitzvah, Savta, (my mother,) will dance with you as well as my own grandmothers and grandfathers …who won’t want to be at your Bas Mitzavh!? I know it will be unbelievable!”
In the meantime, we are preparing in honor of your Bas Mitzvah down here as well. We will follow the conversation I had with you. I won’t forget the details.
I didn’t forget the colors we discussed.
You are feeling better like I promised -right? More then better. You must be ascending to unimaginable heights.
You said you want a grand party like a wedding ..thanking Hashem ..
We are going to be having a Hachnosas Sefer Torah for you – A wedding between us, Hashem and the Torah.
