A reunion for students was held recently in Bat Yam. For many years Israelis seeking to study law were restricted by the number of available places in Israel’s universities. Many therefore chose to study abroad, and Sheffield, England became a firm favourite.
This did not escape the attention of Yoinosson and Faige Rochel Golomb when they arrived there as Rabbi and Chabad representatives in 1992 to find approximately 200 students around town. Great friendships were made and hospitality enjoyed. Some stayed in contact after graduating, but over the years this waned.
A former student who is now a Chabad chossid, knowing that the Golombs would be in Israel, had the idea to bring together as many former students as he could at short notice and organized a melava malkah at his home in Bat Yam.
Stories, memories and even niggunim learned at Sheffield were all shared in what proved to be an enjoyable and touching evening. Many are married with children of their own and successful business owners, but the memories of their shabbossim at Chabad twenty years ago have not been forgotten.
“Working with students,” said Rabbi Golomb, “is always rewarding; they may not say anything about the impact you’ve had on them at the time, but if you’re prepared to wait twenty years – they will.”
